I decided to do something really different. I will change my career to something way more meaningful. I am going to become a youth pastor.
Why something completely different all of a sudden?
For some of you it might be coming out of the blue, quite sudden and not thought through. But the idea to quit IT and go study in Sydney to become a youth pastor actually was born in April 2012. So since then the idea got more and more concrete and this year I am finally flying to Sydney in July.
Why Sydney?
Well that’s a good questeion. Yes there are colleges in Germany that would be less expensive. But THIS college does not exist in Germany. I am going to study at the Hillsong College in cooperation with the Alphacrucis College. The Hillsong College is part of the Hillsong church a church that was founded in 1983 (and therefore is as old as I am ) in Sydney, Australia. Hillsong is known for it’s contemporary Christian Music. Also Hillsong established a new style of church service that feels more like an event or concert. All this is fun and nice but I actually want to study there because of a married couple that I met briefly. They were back than the pastors of the Lakeside Church now Hillsong church in Konstanz. I loved there enthusiasm, their love for Jesus and for people. Yes part of that is their personality but it also shows me that people who studied at Hillsong college still have a great love for Jesus or their love for Jesus and people might even grow because of their studies at this college. I am really looking forward to get to know this church more and get an intimate look behind the curtain of the church. Plus it will be so much fun to study at an International College with all kinds of cultures coming together. Regarding Sydney: Would that college be in New York, Tokio or Berlin I would study in New York, Tokio or Berlin. But I heard Sydney is great so there’s that.
Why now?
Hmmm why not? I just have a super Christian answer to it, so here we go: I trust God I know his timing is perfect. He told me 2018 and I think to myself okay that’ll do. Hmmm warum nicht? Why not 2012? Well first of god said not now in 2012 and I still had a lot of debt I needed to take care of. Looking back now another reason comes to mind: The masters degree at Hillsong College was introduced in 2016 so I couldn’t have done it in 2012.
What am I studying exactly?
I will earn a Master of Arts Degree in pastoral ministries. For this Master I just need any kind of Bachelor Degree. So my Bachelor of Engineering totally works. With this Masters degree I hope to be able to find a job as a student minister.
Why studend/youth minister?
Well simply because I love students and I love Jesus. I want that students get to know Jesus, and start living their live with him. Through him they can get healed and live life to the fullest. This is my passion and my goal.
Right now I already to this as a hobby on a volunteer basis. I love hanging out with students, talk with them, be there for them and it is awesome to be able to guide them a little. Currently I am spending most of my sunday mornings and friday evenings with my students so my hobby will become my future job. (Plus it is totally awesome to think of fun games and do awesome activities.)
