Mason's Fight Against Cancer

Donation protected
My almost 2 year old nephew, Mason, has been diagnosed with Hepatoblastoma - an extremely rare liver cancer found in fewer than 1 in a million children.

As I sit here writing this description, I have to repeat this to myself over and over again because I can’t seem to grasp the idea that such a young and innocent child could have something so horrible.

On Sunday, July 2nd, Claire took Mason to the doctor because he was having stomach pains and didn’t want to eat or drink. Thinking he was severely dehydrated, the doctor suggested they go to the ER. He received an ultrasound, x-ray, blood test and MRI, among other tests. The scans revealed that Mason had multiple tumors on his liver.

Yesterday, July 7th, Mason was officially diagnosed with Stage 3 Hepatoblastoma. Stage 3 is when the tumor is not initially resectable. Mason is scheduled to undergo a total of 6 cycles of chemotherapy (21 days each). After every 2 cycles, he will be seen at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital by their Liver Cancer Surgical Team to determine if the tumors have shrunk enough to be surgically removed. Due to the number and sizes of his tumors, Mason will most likely require a liver transplant. He started his first chemo treatment last night.

At a time when Mason should be focused on learning, making friends, having fun and just being a kid, he is now confined to the hospital and home.

Those who already know Mason have fallen in love with his energetic, loving personality. He is an outdoor loving, ball obsessed, Mickey Mouse fanatic who is always on the go. His laugh is infectious and he has a side eye mean mug that you can’t help but smile at. Not to mention his amazing eyelashes and incredible curls.

Mason is a strong little man and there is no doubt he gets that from his parents.

In preparation for Mason’s treatment, Demarco and Claire have become painfully aware of how overwhelming the cost of out-of-pocket medical expenses, travel, meals and hotel stays will be. Mason will not be able to attend daycare due to the risk of infections so one of them will have to stay home during the duration of his treatment.

They shouldn’t have to worry about work, bills, gas, food and parking. All they should focus on is helping Mason beat this battle!

I know many of you have reached out asking for ways to help so this page was created for those who want to offer support financially. We are asking for any amount of donation that you can contribute. We need help so we can make this fight a success.

Just as important, we ask for your prayers, positive thoughts and encouragement. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you!
