Mask Transit

Background
Across the United States, neighborhoods with high poverty rates are seeing more cases of COVID-19 than those in affluent areas. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC)’s recommendations to wear a facial covering whenever in public has further widened disparities as many of these individuals do not have access to proper facial coverings or lack education on proper facial covering use.

Aim/Mission
Mask Transit is a grassroots organization that aims to decrease the gap in preventative care perpetuated by COVID-19. As an extension of work by other organizations to support healthcare workers, Mask Transit focuses on providing facial covering kits to the most vulnerable members of our population, including essential workers, individuals of low socioeconomic status (SES), and the undomiciled.

Impact
Since its founding in April 2020 by a medical student at Mount Sinai, Mask Transit has grown into a team of 75 medical and graduate students across 12 institutions. We have donated 75k facial coverings to 50+ community organizations in 9 states, including student-run free clinics, food banks, homeless shelters, and public housing developments.

Existing Need
We are asking for monetary donations to help offset the costs of purchasing facial coverings, printing educational materials, and shipping facial covering kits to our national chapters. To donate homemade masks and/or materials, please visit us at masktransit.org.

Stay safe and thank you for your contribution!
