#MaskOutHate

Hatred is only one byproduct of the structures that reinforce racism. #MaskOutHate creates cultural and community pride, and advances prosperity for BIPOC communities by asking how we can leverage masks as anti-racist tools for folks most impacted by profiling and racist violence.  We are empowering the voices of communities of color in finding the answer through a series of mask design workshops led by local BIPOC artists and partnering with local businesses to provide a revenue opportunity in the fabrication and distribution of masks.

Follow us on Instagram @maskouthate to keep up with the action!

RACISM EXPOSED
×  Police who target Black individuals for ‘looking suspicious’ while wearing masks.
×  Individuals who see Asians as diseased and as the source of COVID.
×  Cashiers who distrust darker skinned individuals and expect them to take masks off.
×  A society which has made communities of color more susceptible to COVID, but also less likely to be able to shelter at home, creating front line workers without a choice.
×  Employers who pressure front line workers to unmask to avoid “making customers nervous”.

THE PROJECT
Planned Actions

×  Hold a series of 1-2 hour online workshops to empower BIPOC to generate designs in response to the #MaskOutHate problem statement
×  Facilitate the production of masks that are designed through these workshops
×  Promote the sale and distribution of these products to generate revenue and awareness for BIPOC creatives and manufacturers
×  Create an exhibit of all designs produced.

Desired Outcomes
× Promote cultural and community pride, prosperity and wealth
× Draw attention to the disproportionate impacts of COVID on communities of color and the compounded effects of racial profiling
× Drive social and economic justice in Black communities and communities of color by creating income-generating opportunities and a celebration of identity

FUNDING
There are many valuable ways to be engaged, and we acknowledge the precariousness of this moment. With deep gratitude, we are asking those of you in the position to make a financial contribution to please support with $100, or at the level that is meaningful for you.

Racism perpetuates itself by devaluing and exploiting Black lives and the lives of people of color. We are centering BIPOC creatives and production partners, not asking them to contribute their labor for free. The #MaskOutHate project has set a target budget of $5,000 to pay artists, produce prototypes of their designs, and offset the costs of translation/facilitation services during workshops.

We are committed to full transparency on the use of funds raised. All extra proceeds will be fed back into Portland’s BIPOC communities through organizations designated by workshop artists.
