My brother, Jon Masaracchia, was recently diagnosed with an aggressive form of colon cancer. He is only 37 years old.
On July 18th, Jon went in for a colonoscopy after months of unpleasant "bathroom issues." There the doctors discovered a very large tumor toward the end of his colon. On July 24th, he underwent surgery. They removed the malignant tumor, along with a portion of his colon. While in surgery the doctors noticed some suspicious shading on his liver and sent it off to be biopsied. Jon spent a week in the hospital. The biopsy eventually came back, indicating that the cancer had spread to his liver. He would need to undergo chemotherapy. He had a port placed on August 21st and began iron treatments on August 24th and 28th. Jon began his first round of IV and oral chemotherapy on August 30th. He will receive treatments every other week for a number of months.
The total monthly cost for treatment is estimated to be around $30,000. Jon does not have medical insurance. Due to the (Un)Affordable Care Act, faced with skyrocketing premiums and incredibly high deductibles, Jon was forced to choose between continuing to insure himself or paying the penalty and continuing to provide adequately for his family. He chose his family. Hindsight is 20/20.
He has already accumulated tens of thousands of dollars of debt. While he makes frequent payments toward his growing debt, we are hoping to raise money in an effort to offset some of the financial burden on Jon and his wife, Melissa, and son, Sammy. Jon still goes to work every day, but has to take it easy. He can't put in the hours he used to. And there are many more days in the future that he'll need to miss for treatments, recovery, etc. Melissa has also had to miss a number of days of work in order to drive Jon to and from appointments and treatments, etc. Help us lighten this load for Jon and his family.
