Go Fund Me

I want to come home for Christmas

It is with much trepidation that I have contemplated organizing a Go-Fund-Me campaign for myself.  The weight of my worries and fears for the future trouble me greatly.  After much prayer and reflection, I have decided to reach out to my old friends on Facebook in search of a little help this Christmas season.  I am facing a couple of different circumstances and am not sure where to turn.  It is likely true that money does not buy happiness, but a little of it can go a long way toward solving personal crises and financial dilemmas.

Most of you know me as an infamous native of Mount Olive, Illinois.  Our Dad passed away some years ago and not long ago, we moved our Mom to Springfield, Illinois, where my two youngest sisters, Bobbi and Alice, provide her care.  Mom is 91 years old now and in that stage of life where she has good days and bad.  For some reason, I feel strongly compelled, almost driven, to come home for Christmas this year to spend it with my family.  I have not been home for Christmas in several years now.  Regrettably, though, I cannot afford either the airfare or the Amtrak train fare and my old car with its quarter-million miles cannot be depended on to make the trip.

The last few years have not been easy ones for me in many ways.  I encountered troubles in all the aspects that make us human – the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.  But with the determined tenacity us down-home Midwesterners are known for, I reached deep inside myself and mustered the courage to begin a process of physical healing and spiritual renewal.  Through the grace of a loving and merciful Creator, or God, if you will, I am being restored to a state of well-being which I have not known for some time now.  I have found a new way of living that is providing the means by which I am creating a life filled with meaning, purpose and direction.

I am an open-book and welcome the opportunity to honestly share my story with any of you who desires to know more about me and the details of what has transpired in my life.  I graduated, Magna Cum Laude, from the University of Colorado-Denver in 2016 at the age of 58 with my bachelor’s degree in communication.  I am now a graduate student in the social sciences in the community and public health track program.  I have also completed all of my coursework to become a certified addictions counselor and will begin my clinical hours this winter at a Denver-area treatment center.  My research interests lie in working with an aging population of Boomers in areas that specifically address recovery from chemical dependency.  I was recently invited to present my research findings on the impact of food and nutrition in early stages of recovery at the AIS Conference held at the University of Maryland-Baltimore.

I have, however, run into a financial glitch that is seriously impeding my ability to move forward with my studies and my research.  I owe a past-due balance for tuition and there is a hold on my account that prevents me from registering for classes this winter semester.  There is so much at stake and I have come so far and surmounted so many personal obstacles that I cannot bear the thought of failing at this juncture.  I am so close to achieving my Master’s degree and moving forward with a new career in public health and addictions counseling.

The financial obligations that I am unable to meet include:

1.      $    500 … Amtrak fare from Denver to Springfield, Illinois, for Christmas with my family

2.      $ 1,400 … Past-due tuition payable to the University of Colorado-Denver so I can continue work on my Master's degree

3.      $    800 … To get my car released from the mechanic who repaired it recently

4.      $    200 … For a warm winter coat as mine is now worn out and threadbare

5.      $    500 … Toward January rent payment

Fortunately, I am beginning a new job as a research assistant conducting field work for the University of Colorado-Boulder.  The pay is ample, but the project does not begin until after the first of the year and will not be adequate to cover these listed expenses.

Therefore, I am humbly appealing to my old friends in order to seduce a small contribution to my Go-Fund-Me campaign so that I can come home for Christmas, pay my tuition bill and graduate from college in a field that will help me utilize my experience in the service of others.

Please feel most welcome to contact me personally by email or text, or just call me directly on my cellphone if you are able and open to helping me out.  I am most willing to share any personal information you would like to know about my life story or answer any questions you may have.

It is my fervent hope that each and every one of you will find the light of healing grace and mercy shining on you and your family throughout this coming New Year!  Blessed wishes for a miraculous holiday season!

With highest regards,

Mary P. Ozanic
