Maryellen’s Cancer Battle Fund

I’m reaching out to ask for your help for my sister Maryellen. She was diagnosed with Stage 4 Throat Cancer in January 2017. It was too advanced for chemo therapy treatments and aggressive surgery was the only option. In March she underwent an 11 hour, complete Laryngectomy procedure at University of Pennsylvania Hospital. Her voice box and vocal chords were removed. She can no longer speak and breathes with difficulty through a stoma opening in her neck.
There were some scary times in the ICU and during the two months she spent in specialized nursing care facilities and 6 weeks of radiation. We’re so grateful for the care her doctors, surgeons & nursing teams provided. Many heartfelt thanks to family and friends who’ve been there for Maryellen (especially Sue Worthington!) and to her compassionate employer.
The absolute best news came recently when we learned that Maryellen is cancer free!!! Thank you God!!! But the journey is not over. Healing in the neck & stoma has been slow. Complications prompted several 911 calls, ambulance (and a helicopter) transport to hospitals for emergency help that resulted in hospitalization each time. A 2nd stoma surgery was required a few weeks ago.
Upcoming, she will be evaluated for specialized treatments to aid in healing & rehabilitation. The doctor tells us that when she’s fully healed she may be a candidate for a surgically inserted device that could help her communicate verbally. We hope for the best! Through all this, Maryellen continues to keep her notorious sense of humor! She wants a healthy future.
At the start of this battle Maryellen told me her vision was to beat cancer and have as normal a life as possible, to return to work full time when she can so that she can keep her home and live independently.
It would mean so much if you could help Maryellen get through this ongoing health & financial crisis. She's lost work time, wages and her savings.
