The funds raised through this Go Fund Me site will be used to help Marybeth and her husband, Norb, with the significant medical and hospitalization bills that are and will be piling up due to the injuries and post-surgical complications she has sustained because of this horrible car accident. In addition, monies raised will be used to help make their Iowa farm home wheelchair accessible for Marybeth, a wheelchair accessible van and to help with the costs of the medical equipment she’ll need as she begins, at age 60, her new altered life without the use of her legs and lower body. As she is paralyzed from the waist down.

Her story: On Wednesday, August 15,2018, Marybeth was a passenger in a car driven by her friend and neighbor, June. They were returning home to Iowa from work when a sudden downpour of rainfall caused the pavement of I-90 to become very wet. The car, unfortunately, hydroplaned due to the wet road conditions.  Losing control, the car entered the median of the highway and crossed into oncoming traffic where a head-on collision with a semi occurred.   Both women miraculously survived this horrific head-on semi collision crash; however, both have sustained major, forever life-altering injuries.  Marybeth has been conscience and alert  since the accident.

Marybeth had some abdominal bleeding present following the accident requiring the medical team to perform open abdominal exploratory surgery to determine the severity of the injuries in that area of her body. This surgery happened just hours after she arrived by ambulance at the hospital the night of the accident. It was also determined later that one of her legs was broken.

In addition to her internal bleeding and broken leg, Marybeth’s most critical injuries were to her back and spinal cord. Her back was fractured, and her spinal cord suffered very serious contusions as a result. She had two separate major spinal surgeries during the first two days following the car accident. The first surgery involved fusing both the 3 vertebrae above and the 3 below the spinal cord injury together to support and stabilize the backside of the spine. The second major spinal surgery, called a corpectomy, was performed the following morning. This was done help to give additional support and stability to the front of the spine. She is now paralyzed from the waist down

Besides having three major surgeries in the first two and a half days following the car crash, Marybeth has suffered several serious post-surgical complications as well. Two days after her second spinal surgery, a blood clot and fluid moved into one of her lungs requiring yet another surgical procedure to be performed to install a type of filter to prevent more clots from moving into her lungs. A regiment of blood thinning anticoagulant medication had to be implemented at that point as well. In addition, the lung involved with the blood clot and fluid was also partially collapsed. Other postsurgical complications for Marybeth have included difficult breathing issues, low blood counts, and low blood pressure.

She has been able to sit up with the use of a brace.  After spending more than a week in the ICU at Mayo-St. Mary’s Hospital, Marybeth was admitted to the rehab floor at the hospital late the afternoon of Friday, August 24 to begin the rehab therapy needed. However, on Sunday, August 26 she began dealing with more post-surgical complications that involve internal bleeding in her liver area. She has been moved back to the ICU at this point and will have a scope to determine the cause of this recent bleeding. Each of these complications certainly are and have been major set-backs for Marybeth’s rehab therapy to fully begin so that she can hopefully return home once again.
