Managed by volunteers who admire the indomitable 105 (soon to be 106) year old Dr. Mary Anne Cooper, this GoFundMe campaign supports the creation of a broadcast-quality documentary film. It features Port Moody’s most senior citizen and her hometown of Port Moody. The City and Mary Anne are the same age and this film tells their parallel history.
Mary Anne demonstrates time and again that age is no deterrent for those who wish to be fully engaged in their community. This super senior keeps fit and positive, speaks wisely and regularly at council meetings and lobbies persistently for what she believes. She won a US national swimming award at age 96. She is a champion of community gardens and sustainability and has a doctorate in environmental education. What is her recipe?
‘The Spirit of Port Moody’ captures Mary Anne’s unique personality and lifestyle and acknowledges her body of work as a senior who at 87 achieved heritage designation for the historic Ioco townsite. The film includes early indigenous stories, wonderful archival material and photos of Port Moody, current cityscapes, and rich commentary by Port Moody Station Museum director Jim Millar and many others. The compelling story of Mary Anne’s efforts to protect the Ioco townsite puts a spotlight on heritage losses and on the value of heritage conservation.
We are excited to have Port Moody’s internationally recognized documentary filmmaker Eva Wunderman at the helm. Renowned Canadian concert pianist and composer Martin Mayer is creating the musical score for the film.
Won’t you join us to make this happen? Donations of any amount are gratefully accepted with all funds going towards production costs. We have come a long way with the filming and with fundraising through GoFundMe, donations brought to city hall, and special events. So far, we’ve raised almost $32,000 and we need $10,000 more for completion.
