Mary's Breast Cancer Journey

My daughter Mary’s story began on Oct 4, 2017 when she suffered a traumatic brain injury. For over 11 months, Mary struggled to regain her physical and cognitive function. With the support of her friends, family, and countless speech and physical therapy sessions Mary achieved her goal. Then the unthinkable happened, my 37 year old beautiful, strong and determined daughter was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer!

For the last 6 months Mary Cate, has been going through aggressive chemo treatments to prepare for a bilateral mastectomy which will include the removal of the lymph nodes in her right arm. This surgery will be followed by additional chemotherapy and radiation. Although, it is impossible to imagine what she has been through, Mary continues to fight for her life with gratitude, a strong faith, a smile on her face and the determination to WIN this battle. Those of you who know Mary, know that she is a true inspiration to her friends, her family and anyone who has the good fortune to have her in their life. Her attitude and love of life is contagious.

Unfortunately, this 17 month journey combined with a single income, and the inability to work full time, has made paying her household bills and exorbitant medical expenses a huge challenge.  Due to her previous traumatic brain injury the year before, she is not eligible for any medical/family leave or short-term disability. The side effects of her aggressive chemo treatment are many, leaving her ill for days. Instead of resting and focusing on healing, Mary pushes herself to work what hours she can- but it isn’t enough. I am proud of Mary’s work ethic.
