Marvin Hanke Benefit

Marvin Hanke-Vietnam War Veteran

Marvin Hanke, Juneau, WI.  I am writing this on behalf of my younger brother Marvin.

Marvin is a graduate of Hartford High School.  After graduation Marvin was living at home on the family farm and working at Metalcraft in Mayville.  At the age of 20 years old, Marvin was drafted and proudly served his country in the United States Army as an MP. (18 MP Brigade 720 MP Company).  Marvin served in Vietnam during 1968/1969.  It was during his service, on the front line, where he carried the chemical, Agent Orange, in a backpack and sprayed the foliage.  The pack routinely leaked and the chemical ran down his body and he breathed in the fumes.  Back then there wasn’t protective gear like we have available today which could have helped to protect him and the other soldiers.

As this group ages, we are learning what the effects of Agent Orange is doing to these individuals.  In researching this topic, the government has not yet taken responsibility for this problem.  Families have been left to find their way through the bureaucratic paperwork to get help.

We have found information on a website through VA and Claims that states the following:  Veterans who develop Multiple Myeloma and were exposed to Agent Orange or other herbicides, do not have to prove a connection between their disease and service to be eligible for VA healthcare and compensation.  Marvin’s first bout with cancer was with Prostate Cancer a few years ago, however, Marvin has recently been diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma.     Multiple Myeloma is a nasty cancer caused by an overproduction of certain proteins from white blood cells.  Marvin is currently on experimental drugs to combat the cancer which so far has not been covered by his health insurance. The drugs are outrageously expensive.

The website is http://www.publichealth.va.gov/exposures/agentorange/conditions/multiple-myeloma.asp
