This is an update for Sept. 30:
Most of my basic recovery has been completed. Pain levels are recovering a little more and I'm settling down. My nervous tension really peaked from this storm but lots of lessons were learned.

I've spent about $3700 on expenses and will now spend another $2000 to get ready for the next one...including the LAVA Flow which is now about 4-5 miles instead of 20.

I'm fortunate to have a support network to help me get through these very difficult times. I was able to deposit $9000.00 total proceeds from this campagn. So again, Many mahalos to everybody!! and especial Lisa Wiseman of Intero Realty.

Here in Hawaii my house is on the MLS Market and my website is been completely updated: http://www.mimmackmotivational.com

In October, I will attend my Class of 1984 Santa Clara University Reunion. Without your assistance this trip would not be possible this year.

This is to thank you for your financial assistance during my crisis. Since everybody wants different things in a Mahalo nui loa, let me stop there.

Now here’s some info. and an update for Day 26 9/1/14:
The extra bills will continue for months but the help I received from you and over 40 others will greatly alleviate the pressure I will face going forward. I’ve spent $2,200 on storm related expenses so far and know of almost $2000 more coming soon. The net total collected stands at 80% of the original goal.

I’m finally catching up on sleep and resettling into my home again. The nerves are still pretty shot but they are slowly regaining stability. The severe neck pain is chronic but really peaked during the aftermath. I’ll continue its management with various routines including lite chiropractic, exercise and orthopedic treatments.

Again, Mahalo for helping me get through this crisis. I’m connected with many loving people and I cherish your awareness, understanding and generosity.

With Love,
Marty

Marty’s Journal Day 19: 8/21/14.
Now trying to control orthopedic nerve pain annd calm down.

After returning home, the scale of my needs hit me because all of my financial investments are in my house and property. House is still for sale, $234K.
I’m afraid of what this could mean for my budget, reserves, long-term financial fitness and remaining equity which has a big chance of dwindling greatly based on market negatives after the storm. The money requested will go towards these things and others mentioned through these incident reports.

I’m working hard long days to keep my eye on the ball while trying to heal deep personal functional wounds. As you can see below, I am trying to tap a major media outlet to hear my story. Included below is a letter of testimony requested by good morning America.

Explanation of Indirect storm-related expenses/house repairs include:

1. Replacement and upgrade to emergency preparedness supplies. Shelter in-place back up equipment.
2. Review of and update to deficiencies found in my cell phone, phone list, computer systems, internet connectivity and "grabngo" bag
3. My speaking business cannot be run until after recovery unless major contract comes with little/no marketing.
Personal attendant care until pain subsides, 4-8 weeks
4. Power wash roof and repaint roof.
5. Power wash siding, eaves, windows, doors, slabs
6. New ant infestation control
7. Finish new catchment and clean inside
8. Update to rec. room floor to attract buyer
9. Major change to more prepared foods, eating out and more expensive smaller quantities.
10. Help pay to remove my huge albezia trees in next door neighbor’s yard
11. Replace socks-lost during evacuation
12. Detail truck inside and out
13. Four new chairs with ergonomic contours to relieve pain
14. Specialized bedding to assist in sleep
15. Chinese herbs to reduce stress and increase energy
16. New ergonomic work station and software to regain productivity
17. Need to erase certain memories by replacing belongings/items
18. Possible trouble with 2001 refrigerator – they go bad faster here in Hawaii
19. Old brakes on truck finally went bad during evacuation to kona
20. Update drinking water system
21. Extra short term secretary for speaking business

I contacted the following news outlets:
1. Oprah Winfrey

3. KHON Honolulu
4. KGMB Honolulu
5. KHNL Honolulu/Paula Akana

aloha: NO CAPS

I own a home in one of the hardest hit areas (by Iselle 8/7/14) of Hawaiian Paradise Park on the Big Island of Hawaii. I’m an upper bilateral amputee with other congenital deformities that rode out the storm and its aftermath using my independent living skills. I have quite a story that has all of the major cultural aspects/impacts because i live alone, pay my own bills and am fairly well integrated into the community.

examples of interest to which I am witness/directly involved:
• Hawaii primary election problems/constitutional questions
• Unique special needs before, during and after the crisis called the ripple-effect
• Real estate investment
• Self-esteem, self-reliance, fortitude, perseverance
• Emotional distress, orthopedic nerve pain and inability to lift
• Love and relationships
• Friends, relatives, volunteers, red cross, civil defense
• Financial loss, money management, emergency nest eggs, budgets and spending.
• Home office, self-employment, earned income tax credit, SSDI, Medicare
• Doctors, diagnoses, over prescribing, medical costs, Part D
• Disaster response, special needs shelters, basic needs like running water, ice, bathing, communications

My story is online at http://www.gofundme.com/martyhurricanerelief

My website is http://www.mimmackmotivational.com

My house and other property are not damaged. My unique situation however demands that I assert my needs because the financial devastation threaten my long-term retirement nest-egg.

I’m fairly well known as a successful national poster boy for the march of dimes in 1970. My resume is long and my education has been a saving grace due to the shear cognitive power that built up to compensate for lack of physical finesse.

I welcome any attention abc can give to my story because I’m in need of extra help. I’m trying to make sure I preserve equity in my home and having some financial padding will help keep my long-term budget from being severely depleted.

as an educator, there is a tremendous opportunity here. I want to transmit to viewers that ones personal inner constitution, decision making, problem solving and ability to trust in oneself quickly rise to the surface in most of our daily lives but especially when weather changes lives.

At this point I have no time or energy for photos, evidence and attachments here. My journal is detailed and can be used.

Thanks for your consideration of this important event.

Original Message 8/10/14:
My amazing friend Marty, a former March of Dimes Poster Boy lives in a rural area on the Big Island that has been devastated by the hurricane and is currently experiencing a crisis. They have been told there will be no electricity for 2 weeks. Everything in his home runs on electricity, so this has completely disrupted his life. The county civil defense is handing out water and tarps, but that's about it. He is handicapped and has no arms and is basically helpless at this point so he has decided he will have to board up his home, which is on the market and  come back to California to stay with friends.

In addition to his current bills, this is financially devastating for him. His budget has escalated as it was critical that he sell his home and now potential buyers are leaving the island. All his current bills are in jeopardy because of the financial demands of the situation and the money is going to other expenses. For example his income is $1,100 and bills $2,500 and rising.

He is not one to ask for charity, but he needs your help. He has been of service to many for so long. If we get 50 people to donate $200, or even 100 to donate $100 we'd be there!

Below are just some of the expenses he needs assistance with:

-$1,000 tree work and yard cleanup
-$400 miscellaneous personal attendant care, over and above his
3-6 hr a week standard care
-Over $1,000 in hotels fees as he needs to evacuate due to pre
 booked rooms

-$2,500 for a generator if unable to evacuate and for future use
-$500 in gas to travel for food and other necessities
-$500 for personal hygiene necessities
-$300-$400 for a new cell phone
-$500 in dining out costs as his home is all electric
-$$$Plane tickets to return to California at some point

Please help if you can. Thank you. Below is Marty's website for his motivational and anti-bullying work he conducts at schools.
