ON THE early morning of January 16, 2021, someone driving an All Terrain Vehicle made a decision to drive over the sacred burial ground at Martindale Pioneer Cemetery and use the site to do wheel spins.
This is not the first shocking act of disrespect for this final resting place of many of those who survived the Irish Famine. Fortunately, there was no damage this time but it has required urgent action to help ensure that it does not happen again. A fence has now been put in place to help secure the area.
Work is also ongoing as a proper pathway up to the memorial must be put in place to assist access visitors with mobility issues.
The church, along with the Martindale Pioneer Cemetery, is a treasured historical landmark for all Irish-Canadians and a testament to the early Irish Catholic immigrants.
The parish has served generations of young Irish-Canadians, many of whom have now moved on to other locations across Canada and the U.S.A.
Will you join in helping to ensure this important historic marker is in place for generations to come.
