Maroons of Jamaica DEVASTATED

Donation protected
The Windward Maroons of the Rio Grande Valley  of the Blue and John Crow Mountains of  Jamaica need immediate HELP.  The residents of the Cornwall Barracks community, which was established by legendary chieftainess of the Maroons of Jamaica, Nana Akua Pokua commonly known as Nanny of the Maroons to protect the main town Nanny Town (also called Moore Town) in which she lived are in dire assistance. The only road in/out of the community has completely collapsed, and the residents are completely trapped inside the community. The children are unable to go to school, breadwinners unable to go to work and elders who are unable to receive medical attention. Cornwall Barracks is within the Rio Grande Valley Maroon territory of the Blue and John Crow Mountains, with a very difficult terrain in an already isolated area, and so this puts the residents in a very dangerous situation.

The Windward Maroons of the island call home the Blue and John Crow Mountains of Jamaica, peaking at an altitude of 7,402 ft. Our community is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to many endemic flora and fauna which includes but is not exclusive to the second largest butterfly in the world and largest in the Americas; the endangered Giant Swallowtail Butterfly, the endangered Jamaican Coney, otherwise called Grazie or Hutia; a traditional indigenous Taino food source and still known to our people as such, and the endangered Jamaican Yellow Boa, plus a cultural treasure unlike anything else on the globe scoring number nineteen on the UN Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity inscribed by UNESCO. Our home, the Blue and John Crow Mountains is also the only place in the world where the world famous Blue Mountains highland coffee can be grown, as well as the source of the purest water in the world; the Blue Mountains Spring Water. The Blue and John Crow Mountains is also the source of water for the entire capital city of Kingston, Jamaica and its surrounding areas. The history of our people has been intertwined with struggle and warfare. The Maroons are the only people in the world who successfully waged war against the British Empire, forcing them to sue for peace, resulting in the 1738 and 1739 treaties between the British Empire and the Leeward and Windward Maroons respectively, and resulting in the British Empire recognizing our right to autonomy and self-government. Our home has been a place of refuge for our people, and those who choose to join us.

The Granny Nanny Cultural Group is a cultural and traditional preservation and conservation organization, chartered by Major Charles Aarons of the Harris Clan of the Rio Grande Valley Maroons. "Major" is the second highest position on the committee which governs our people, and is a life-long position in which he was elected to in 1988. The Granny Nanny Cultural Group is the sole caretaker of the intangible cultural heritage which is ranked 19th on the UNESCO's World Intangible Cultural Heritage to Humanity list, and works fervently to preserve an endangered treasure.  The Granny Nanny Cultural Group had released an album in 2016 in which proceeds were donated to all the schools in the Rio Grande Valley. The Granny Nanny Cultural Group is currently raising funds to repair the road, so that the residents within the community can regain access. The Granny Nanny Cultural Group is also organizing a series of fund-raising efforts and events to gather the funds needed to repair the roads as the Maroons are in DESPERATE need of EMERGENCY assistance.
