 Ich habe mein Leben lang davon geträumt, einen flachen Oberkörper zu haben - auch wenn ich erst mit Ende Zwanzig gecheckt habe, dass ich trans* und nichtbinär bin. Als Kind und Teenager kannte ich leider keine Vorbilder, die mir hätten vorleben können, wer ich eines Tages sein könnte, und ich hatte keine Worte für meinen Struggle. Nach einem Leben voller Selbstzweifel und gescheiterten Anpassungsversuchen war das Outing vor mir selbst unfassbar befreiend. Um es in Fizzarollis Worten zu sagen: 'I don't hide what I am - I know exactly who I am'.

 Heute weiß ich mehr als je zuvor, wer ich bin und wer ich sein möchte. Die Topsurgery im Jahr 2025 war der erste große Schritt auf diesem Weg. Ich bereue sie keine Sekunde. Zum ersten Mal fühlt sich mein Körper "richtig" an. Es klingt vielleicht zu krass, aber die OP war für mich überlebenswichtig. Wenn ihr auch trans* seid oder jemandem sehr nahesteht, der trans* ist, wisst ihr sicher, was ich meine.

 2025 habe ich mich endlich für mehr Lebensqualität entschieden und eine Klinik gefunden, in der ich mich zu einhundert Prozent aufgehoben gefühlt habe. Die Betreuung vor und nach der OP durch meinen Chirurgen und generell durch das Klinikpersonal war hervorragend – professionelle, einfühlsame und kompetente Begleitung vom Erstgespräch bis zur letzten Nachkontrolle. Mein gewählter Name wurde von Anfang an respektiert. Das Ergebnis ist genau so, wie ich es mir erhofft hatte. Meine Narben sind super verheilt. Medizinisch bin ich auf der sicheren Seite.

 Als nichtbinäre Person hatte ich leider keine Aussicht auf Kostenübernahme durch die Krankenkasse. Auch in der Vergangenheit hat mich die Kasse schon mehrfach im Stich gelassen – chronische Erkrankungen haben mich in den letzten Jahren bereits stark finanziell belastet, ohne dass je nachhaltige Hilfe kam. Immer wieder ein Kampf gegen Windmühlen. Bei der Mastektomie war es nicht anders: Die Auseinandersetzung mit der Krankenkasse, für die ich als Nonbinary quasi nichtmal existiere, hätte Jahre gedauert – Zeit, die ich schlicht nicht hatte. Also blieb mir nur, alles selbst zu zahlen.

 Die OP war für mich lebensnotwendig und ich werde sie nie bereuen. Aber sie hat mich finanziell stark getroffen. Die Gesamtkosten haben ein Loch hinterlassen, das ich allein nicht schließen kann. Die OP hat rund 9.000 € gekostet, meine gesamten Ersparnisse aufgebraucht und zusätzlich Schulden hinterlassen. Mein finanzieller Puffer ist weg, und ich habe Geld geliehen, das ich zurückzahlen muss.

 I've dreamed my whole life of having a flat chest—even though I didn't realize until my late twenties that I'm trans* and non-binary. As a child and teenager, unfortunately I didn't have any role models who could have shown me who I might become, and I like many of us, I didn't have the words to describe my struggle. After a life full of self-doubt and failed attempts to fit into the binary, coming out to myself was incredibly liberating. To quote Fizzarolli: “I don’t hide what I am—I know exactly who I am.”

 Today, I know more than ever before who I am and who I want to be. The top surgery in 2025 was the first big step on my journey. I won’t ever regret this. For the first time, my body feels right. It might sound a bit extreme, but the operation was a matter of survival for me. If you’re also trans* or are very close to someone who is trans*, I’m sure you know what I mean.

 In 2025, I finally decided to improve my quality of life and found a clinic where I felt completely at ease. The care I received before and after the operation from my surgeon and the clinic staff in general was outstanding – professional, empathetic and competent support from the initial consultation right through to the final follow-up appointment. The name I chose was respected right from the start. The result is exactly as I’d hoped. My scars have healed really well. Medically speaking, I’m in safe hands.

 As a non-binary person, I unfortunately had no prospect of my health insurance covering the costs. The insurance company has let me down on several occasions in the past too – chronic illnesses have already placed a heavy financial burden on me in recent years, without any lasting help ever being forthcoming. It has always been a hopeless battle. It was no different with the mastectomy: dealing with the health insurance company – for whom, as a non-binary person, I practically don’t even exist – would have taken years – time that I simply didn’t have anymore. So I had no choice but to pay for everything myself.

 <strong>My current situation</strong>

 The surgery was crucial to my health and life, and I will never regret it. But financially, it hit hard. The total cost has left a hole that I cannot fill on my own. The operation and everything involved did cost around €9,000, used up all my savings and left me in debt. My financial cushion is gone, and I’ve borrowed money that I have to pay back.
