Mark Hines Memorial Scholarship

On March 11, 2018 Dr. Rick Hines, the Program Director in History and Military History at APUS, lost his brother Mark to a short battle with cancer.

Mark had degrees in Microbiology with a B.S. from Ohio State University in 1973, an M.S. from the University of Connecticut in 1978, and a Ph.D. in from the University of New Hampshire in 1981. In 2002, Mark took a faculty position in the Biology Dept. at UMass Lowell and later became Chair of the Dept. for 10 Years and then Dean of the Kennedy College of Sciences for 4 years.

The two had a lifelong bond. Rick said, "We shared a room our entire childhood, and although he took to the sciences while I favored the humanities we would talk every Sunday for hours on an endless list of topics until someone would finally chase us off the phone."

Rick described Mark as "without a doubt, my best friend in the world." And along with the friendship was a deep respect for his accomplishments in life.  Rick said that Mark was "one of the leading marine micro-biologists in the world.  As proud as I was of his academic accomplishments, I much more admired the man he had become."

We, the friends and colleagues of Rick, would like to contribute to his memory, and we are selecting to raise money for the Mark Hines Memorial Scholarship. This is a scholarship that UMASS-Lowell has established.

We invite you to contribute as a way to support Rick, and also honor the memory of his brother and best friend.
