Marisol's Liver Transplant

Fernando Morales is a carpenter that has worked with me for the past two and a half years. His wife, Marisol, has been struggling with a serious liver disease for the past six years. The disease is so serious that her doctors have told her she needs a new liver to survive. To add to the families struggles, Fernando's sister passed away from Cancer in mid-January 2018.

Here is Fernando's wife's story:
My name is Marisol Morales, I am 29 years old and have two children Fernando, 12, and Yulianna, 11.
Back in 2012 I went to a physical check-up and my doctor asked me to do a yearly blood work test, I received a call the next day and the doctor wanted me to come in. When she examined me, her first question was "are you an alcoholic?" I said no, that I've never drank in my life. She said my liver numbers were really elevated and we had a problem. I didn't have medical insurance at that time so I couldn't go see a specialist. We applied for medical insurance and we were denied 3 times. Finally, after a recommendation from my doctor, two years later, I was able to see a liver specialist at San Francisco's CPMC.
They diagnosed me with Primary Sclerosis Cholangitis. PSC is an autoimmune disease which caused me to also develop both ulcerative colitis and rheumatoid arthritis. It wasn't until 2015 that I started getting my symptoms, and started knowing what living with PSC was like. From 2015 until now I've been in and out of CPMC. The hospital wasn't helping me get better and when I was finally added to Fernando's insurance I was able to go to Stanford in October of 2017.
Since November my health has decreased, I am in constant pain, weak and tired. I have lost 30 pounds in 2 months. I feel weaker and more tired each and every day. During my last hospitalization, in the beginning of January 2018, the doctors told me my disease has progressed significantly and no treatment will help anymore. The only option is a liver transplant.
He asked me to stop taking my daily medications because they are not helping me. We have started the liver transplant work up but we still need to finalize with 3 days of appointments in Palo Alto. Once we finalize I will be ready for a transplant. It has been a long journey for my self, Fernando, and my kids, being in and out of the hospital constantly and Fernando having to miss work frequently. I am very thankful for the support Fernando is getting at work -- thank you very much to all of the Webcor employees.
