Mariposa Masks Initiative: MA & CT

Donation protected
With the supply chain diverted to hospitals, the homeless and immunocompromised are in desperate need for protective masks. The Mariposa Mask Initiative is dedicated to manufacturing, hand-making, and shipping high quality protective cotton masks to homeless shelters in low income Massachusetts and Connecticut communities.

The idea behind Mariposa Mask Initiative came from a Group FaceTime over spring break. As the hashtag #stayhome started to spread, we thought, what about the people who don't have a home to stay in? Although we are safe with access to masks, there are so many marginalized and immunocompromised people who cannot afford to stop working and socially distance themselves. To concentrate our efforts, we decided to focus on low income communities near our high schools in CT and MA that we are familiar with.

In her interview with Spectrum News NY1, Wilma Cortez, a resident of a homeless shelter in Brooklyn states, “No. No masks. No gloves.” “They have some for the workers inside. But for us. They don’t give us nothing. We have to do it to cover our health. If we don’t do it, we’re all going to get sick in here."

Every mask could potentially be a lifesaver for someone who is unable to socially isolate themselves and has extremely limited access to masks. Using t-shirts and bandanas as masks are not enough for those who are already at a higher risk of infection.

I have friends and family members whose loved ones are on ventilators and under hospital care. Everyone does. These masks are for someone else’s family members, best friends, and loved ones who are highly vulnerable in the fight against COVID-19 .

Everything counts. Please make a difference today.

Why Mariposa?
The name Mariposa was inspired by the butterfly effect. Just as every little change can make monumental differences, our small efforts can be instrumental in helping the most vulnerable in our society.

Who we are:
Elina, Juliet, Sam, Sawyer, Matt, and Teddy are all amazing members of our team who met in 6th grade, 5 years ago. Sam, Elina, and Teddy go to school in Massachusetts, whereas Juliet, Sawyer, and Matt live and go to school in Connecticut.
