Welcome to the official "The Marina's Got Talent" fundraising page. All donations go directly to support local Bay Area creatives and food entrepreneurs who may be struggling right now during the self shelter. Every dollar donated to this page will receive a 1:1 corporate match which means DOUBLE the impact for local COVID-19 relief.

The Cause:
In honor of Mother’s Day and my mom’s memory, I launched a light hearted little virtual talent competition and fundraiser called “Marina’s Got Talent” airing at 7pm PT on Friday, May 15th to help support local creatives and talented food entrepreneurs who may need a little extra help right now. One of my mom’s favorite memories before she passed last year were the silly talent shows my siblings and I used to put on for her and my dad growing up where we would make them a “romantic dinner” complete with candles, cut up hot dogs, mustard and ketchup dipping sauce and Lay’s potato chips, which partly inspired this whacky little talent competition. She also always really loved the Mr. Rogers quote below which I think is particularly relevant to this rather strange chapter that we all currently find ourselves in: “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”
During times like this, the heightened knowledge of fragility and mortality produced by such recent events can terrify, embitter and separate. It can also awaken. It can remind us not to take the people who love us for granted and that we can either view such things as a crisis or a call to show up for ourselves and others, a setback or a summons to be something more, an obstacle or an opportunity to make things better. I know a lot of people may be hurting right now and may not be in a position to be able to give, but it has also been breaking may heart watching the emotional and financial toll the recent pandemic has not only taken on my dad who is a musician, but also a lot of my creative friends and restaurant staff who are suffering from lack of income right now. You may not personally know any of the local creatives or talented food entrepreneurs this event and cause is supporting, but if you listened to their stories, really listened, you may frequently be overcome and amazed by their ability to continue to befriend each other, to love their families and to do what they must do to keep the machinery of the world running. You may find how miraculously they prevail and continue to do difficult and effortful tasks to hold themselves, their families and society together and bring a little more light into the world during a rather dark time… and you may find dumbfounded gratitude as the only appropriate response. Such remembrance and gratitude may even inspire you to be a helper yourself, as it did for me not too long ago. So, let’s all come together and help spread creativity and humor faster than COVID-19.

La Cocina is committed to supporting local businesses by providing affordable commercial kitchen space to underrepresented, working class food entrepreneurs who may be struggling with the shelf shelter right now.

“The Marina’s Got Talent” (aka “The Covies”) is a Virtual Talent Competition and Fundraiser. We will have up-to-date information on the website on how best to participate and where to watch.
“The Marina’s Got Talent” Virtual Talent Competition,
7pm on Friday, May 15th
"The Marina’s Got Talent” Virtual Talent Competition will be streamed via Facebook Livestream where attendees will be able to participate and enjoy from the comfort of their own homes. In this virtual performance project, creative bay area residents are being asked to submit an original video in the categories of monologue, short film, stand-up comedy routine, dance or song in the spirit of the Self Shelter or The Marina itself, preferably both. The talent submissions will be judged by both a celebrity jury panel and audience for yet-to-be-announced prizes. We will put together a compilation video prior to the air date and attendees will then be able to live comment and vote for their favorite talent submissions. We will provide everyone access to the talent competition via a link we will provide on the week of the event.
How To Contribute:
1. We are humbling requesting a ~$20 suggested donation (though more is certainly welcomed and appreciated!) to support local SF creatives and food entrepreneurs who may need a little extra help right now. Donation tiers that we completely made up are below:
* $10 Donation: Basic Bro
* $20 Donation: Evolved Bro
* $30 Donation: Super Mario Bro
* $40 Donation: Chad Patron
2. Contribute a talent submission to our website by Wednesday, May 13th! Calling all bay area creatives! We will have up-to-date information on the website regarding the guidelines for video submissions and how best to participate.
