Marin City: the Visual Symphony

The unique film “Marin City” tells the very overlooked story of Marin City, a
low-income, unincorporated town nestled in one of the nation’s wealthiest counties: Marin. Through my discovery of the small town, I meet Royce McLemore, a 77- year old local elder and follow her lead as she intimately shares the story of the historically rich town, hailing as America’s first integrated housing project, built to house workers who migrated to work at Marinship during World War II, which also became the most important migration of the history of African-Americans in the Bay Area, deemed a “new black frontier.” After the war, while other families were given federal subsidies to purchase homes, African Americans were restricted to Marin City--- due to prejudice, redlining laws and restrictive housing covenants and were given Marin’s only housing project: Golden Gate Village. As the film continues, she unveils her family’s connection to the shipyard and both the past and present policing, educational, and housing disparities within the community --- as she fights the county 50 years later to save one of the nation’s only lasting black neighborhoods. The film is set to be performed LIVE in 2021 at symphonies and orchestras in Oakland, Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago.
