Help Jeff and Marilyn

How do you ask someone for help? I’ll be honest - I’ve never been good at it and I suspect most people are not good at it. But I’m asking for help for my little sister and her son. Most of you who come to this page will already know their story. I hope I can convey the urgency to those of you who don’t know them, without sacrificing their dignity and privacy.

Marilyn Davis, my sister, has been bed-ridden for over ten years now, living with an immense back pain that has left her disabled despite the attempts of doctors to fix it with surgery. I would not wish her pain on my worst enemy. Her 32-year-old son, Jeffery, is her caretaker. But Jeffrey has been plagued with serious medical conditions his entire life that have put him in and out of hospitals almost on a weekly basis. He was born with these issues and has been cared for by his loving mother (Marilyn) since birth… but now he cares for her. There is definitely a special place in heaven for this amazing man.

Throw into the mix a husband/father who left them and died shortly thereafter, leaving Marilyn and Jeff to fend for themselves, and you have a perfect storm of two good people living on the edge who do all they can to get by each day. Somehow through careful budgeting, they pay their bills, pay their rent, and they manage to have a little money left to eat after paying for their medication.

Several years ago they were given a car, but it finally drove its last mile. Jeff used it to drive to the grocery store, the drugstore, to doctors visits and the hospital. Now they must do these things by calling a cab, which is not something they can afford.

I and my siblings (and their families) are all pitching in to buy them a used car, so they can go back to living within their means. So I’m asking for help. I’m setting a goal of $2,000 to be able to add what we can to that to buy them something reasonable and have a little left for any initial repairs and maintenance that the car may need.

I would like to add one important comment to this plea. I am very proud of my family, as ALL of them have contributed so much of both money and time over the years to help Marilyn and Jeff. And I am confident my family will ALWAYS do WHATEVER they can to help them, including now. But this time we could use a little help from outside the family circle. All donations are warmly welcomed and sincerely appreciated.
