Marie lost her eldest son Mark in June 2013, Mark was disabled and passed away suddenly from a heart attack, he was 49.
Marie’s second son David who’s also had disabilities became unwell in December 2013 and was diagnosed with bowel cancer, David passed away in February 2016, he was also 49.
Then in 2017 her husband “Bernie “ was diagnosed with prostate cancer, he had it removed, but in September 2018, he was diagnosed with bladder cancer and after many trips to the RPA Hospital in Sydney for treatment, Bernie was told that he needs his bladder removed, so the surgery was scheduled for the 8 March 2019 and after 12 hours on the operating table, they not only removed his bladder but also part of his bowel as the cancer had spread, after 4 weeks recovery in the RPA, Bernie was able to come home, but had to have an emergency trip back to Sydney when his wound reopened, he needed further surgery to close the wound, when he had recovered from that, he had his PET scan done in May 2019 in preparation for radiation / chemo therapy treatment he was told that it had spread into his kidneys, lungs, spine and pelvic bone.
Bernie underwent a 5 day treatment course of ray treatment, but couldn’t commence his chemo treatments as he kept spiking fevers.
So with the help of Marie and his daughter, Bernie spent the next few months at home, he had many admissions to hospital due to the fevers and on the 15th August he had a heart attack, but in true Bernie fashion, he recovered enough to come back home, but he was only home for a short while, he went back to hospital on the 28th August and passed away on the 11 September 2019.
The family has had large expenses with the boys funeral costs, travelling back and forth to Sydney, accommodation to be close to Bernie when he was in the RPA and now Bernie’s funeral costs,
Marie and Bernie looked after their boys at home for their 49years of life and managed the costs of the boys funerals from their savings, Marie and Bernie lived on the aged pension.
Bernie’s hobby was repairing lawn mowers and he was known as the local mower man in Kurri, he also helped out people with servicing of their cars, changing the oil, he did this for a lot of the elderly people around the area, he was always giving.
If you feel you could give back to this family that was always giving it would be greatly appreciated.
