In March of 2014, my family learned that my mother, Marichu, had stage-4 lung cancer. We were told it was terminal and that she had 3-5 months to live. It came as a complete surprise to us, since my mom had never smoked in her life. Doctors said that there wasn't much they could do and suggested palliative care. However, she refused to give up so easily and kept her spirits high despite the circumstances.
Her positivity gave us a lot of hope and gave us the energy we needed to do everything we could to save her life.
She decided to try chemothrapy while getting her lungs drained and having surgeries regularly. Although it allowed her to live beyond what we were told, her condition was still deteriorating overall.
My mom persisted fighting nonetheless, trying and doing everything she could to regain her health. After months of guessing, Doctors finally discovered her genetic mutation and were now able to give her the right medication. Doctors said that this could potentially extend her life for a year, but wouldn't totally cure her.
Through prayer, medicine, and the support of our family and friends, she has exceeded all expectations. Today, 10 months later, she is still fighting and remains hopeful. But as time passes, it is becoming increasingly difficult for my family to support all the costs associated with her recovery. My mom has never asked for anything from anybody, but I am trying to do everything I can to show her others believe in her recovery too.
I feel that my mom has come thus far, but the only thing holding her back from recovery is money. My mom's cancer has shut down my family's ability to support itself because it has become the center of our focus and of our life.
I am reaching out and asking for donations for my mom to help us pay for the costs of battling this disease. She constantly dreams of her recovery so she can watch my sister and I graduate from UCSB, and devote her life to helping other cancer patients overcome their sickness through faith and courage. We're not ready to lose our mom, and she is definitely not ready to give up. Even if you can not donate at this time, all she asks is that you keep her in your thoughts and prayers. Any amount will help.
