Maria's Service Dog

Hello family, friends, aquaintances, and stangers!

It's me! Maria, for those that don't know me. I'm a single stay at home mother of two amazing 2 year olds! Yes, twins...they are my world and the loves of my life...I am also disabled.

...I'd like you to imagine, if you will, being a mother of 2yr old twins. Rambunctious and on the go constantly. Of caring for them in every way and maintaining your home. That's quite the task for someone who's able bodied and fully able to run after them and cook and clean the way you want things done. Now imagine being that mother and having to rely on others to help you do those things because your not able to. I'm not even comfortable taking my kids to a park without a friend there to help me. This is a brief glimpse of my daily life. This service dog will help me be able to do some of these things on my own and more freely. This is why I'm asking for your support. EVERY dollar helps. If you have even $1 you are able to donate, please do. I promise you, you will be giving me AND my children a gift of independence and love...

A diagnoses of limb girdle muscular dystrophy was given in Dec. of 2014. What that means is the muscules in the arms and legs weaken over time due to many factors which prevents the muscles from regaining strength. So in order to help me maintain my independence , I have sought the help of a service dog. It's a Labrador Retriever and  is coming from an awesome organization in Overland Park, KS called Paws for Freedom

Most organizations will pair you with an 8 week old puppy and have you meet with the dog over the course of the dogs growth and training (about 2 years). However, Paws for Freedom, does things a bit different. They select the dogs from the breeders, care for them, and train them before they are ever paired with their person. This allows the dogs personallity to come out in full and reduces the wait an individual has before receiving their dog since the dog is fully trained or close to it, before the person and dog meet. It's part of why I chose them for my dog. Their training is the last 2 full weeks of June.

My original goal was $7000, since starting this campaign, my shelter arranngements for the training have changed. I'm no longer able to stay with a friend the full 2 weeks and will now have to spend 8 nights in a hotel. Of the $8000 I am raising, $6000 is for the cost of the dog itself. This covers all of the time, vet care, food, etc they have invested in the dog itself. It's payable in 3 installments. The remaining $2000 will pay for the pet deposit for my apartment complex, needed supplies for the dog like a crate that they recommend, and my trip to Kansas (including hotel) and back to Louisiana.

I rceived the final approval for my application!!!! I cannot express the excitement I have for being a recipient of one of their service dogs. The ability to remain independent is huge. Imagine for yourself, what it would be like to lose that...so having a dog that can give me back some of what I've lost and then keep me independent for longer is a gift that keeps on giving.

I already have so much gratitude for finding Paws for Freedom. When I was looking at different organizations that offer service dogs, it was like an instant knowing that they were providing my dog. The time they have already invested in me and the allowances of extending the application deadline for me have just cemented them in my mind as an amazing family of people.

I couldn't do this without the support from each of you. And not just financial support, the emotional support I have received from so many friends and family aready has been amazing. So if you can find it in your heart to help out with even just $1, you have my sincere gratitude. Thank you from my heart and soul for helping me receive the gift of a service dog. A companion and friend.
