I am Marianna Shearer, an 84 year old retired teacher who is in desperate need of $1,500 to replace the transmission in my car, a 2001 Ford Focus, which I have affectionately dubbed my “Silver Bullet."
I live by myself in Woodland, California and have no family to help me. My only income comes from Social Security and a small pension. Government food stamps help me stretch my budget.
Frequently, I help other elderly people who are on fixed incomes and more physically challenged than I am. Friends appreciate rides just to get out of their apartments and have a change of environment. I sometimes use my car to run errands for someone who really can't get out. I have given people free rides for medical appointments or emergencies.
Although I scrape together enough to pay for liability insurance, gas, and can handle small repairs by careful budgeting, coming up with $1,500 for a transmission all at once, is impossible for me. I've tried to get a loan or go to a place that will allow me to pay on time but with no success.
Walking even a block hurts too much so I need a car. I follow my doctor's advice to continue to exercise by walking the store aisles, holding on to a shopping cart for support. I am in fairly good health but simply cannot walk without difficulty.
If I live long enough I will eventually need to stop driving, but not yet. I have no vision problems and am mentally alert. I belong to a writing group and hope to teach creative writing to seniors in the fall. I want to get my artwork back on track and possibly sell some of my pictures. I need a car for these things.
I have worked very hard in my life and most of it was good but I can no longer work at a regular job, as most of those available would require standing or walking. I do work for a small amount of money by editing the writing of one of my fellow writers. I don't want this terrible feeling of not being able to pay for something as important as a car repair to happen again, which is the main reason I am determined to find more editing work.
I would be grateful if you could help me out this one time! I have always paid my own way so it isn't easy to ask. There's still life in the old car and, as a matter of fact, in me as well! Please be an important part of getting us both on the road again! Thank you in advance.
