Help a wonderful 90 year-old woman who has given so much to others, keep up her mortgage payments a little longer.  She wants so much to be able to stay in her home, and be able to pass on with dignity, along side her companion, Cuddles, her African Gray Parrot.  Without your help, we fear the bank will throw her out of her home, to an unknown fate before her time comes.

My name is Shama Helena.  Myself and her son, are reaching out in the hope that you will find it in your hearts, to help Mom (Marian Hookailo) find peace of mind, and be able to live out the short time she has left, on her own terms with dignity.

We live in Los Angeles, frustratingly too far to travel easily to help, given our own financial challenges.  She currently lives alone in her Arizona condo, her home for over 24 years, trying to make due on Social Security.

Marian has a mind as sharp as a tack, yet her body betrays her, as her bodily systems are failing at an alarming rate.  She has debilitating Fibromyalgia, three types of arthritis, osteoporosis, a belly button hernia and many other issues.  She can hardly move around much now, but cannot afford any type of help, so she muddles on as best as she can, often relying on the kindness of her local friends and neighbors.

Of late, her heart has developed a bad valve, which, in her condition, is inoperable.  She is clearly in the twilight of her life, and Marian, along with the Dr.’s say that the valve is getting worse every week.  As of now, most efforts she makes to do anything, puts her heart into a fibrillation condition, which once it starts, disables her ability to move, and makes even breathing very difficult.  She can’t even talk on the phone during these attacks.  The last one was so bad (this last Tuesday January 27th), she lost all motor control and fell to the floor, waiting for the attack to stop, so she could pull herself up onto her bed.  She knows if she goes to the hospital that in all probability, that will be the end.

Imagine having the mind of a 40 year old, while your body literally self destructs!  That in itself is a horror.  Add to that the uncertainty of not knowing if the bank will allow her to stay home in her condo, with her beloved companion, and enjoy the rest of her time, as is her wish.

If we can’t keep the mortgage payments up, they will impose yet another terrible injustice,  especially since that injustice is not of her own making!  Despite begging the bank for a loan modification for over 8 years, the bank has refused to help in any way to date!

She was just barely able to pay her bills with our help, and then the “great recession” of 2007 struck.  Since then, we and our friends have continued doing everything we could to help since the banks failed in 2007-2008.  Yet that crash, has hit us all badly enough, to hit a critical enough point, that we are unable to continue our financial support at this time.  I am healing from tonsil cancer and cannot work, and my partner is in the throes of a start-up on his newest venture.  Thus, we are swallowing our pride, and reaching out to all of you.

We fear the shock of being pulled from what she knows and loves, could create enough trauma to shorten whatever time she has left to enjoy her pet, the people who have been kind enough to bring her mail and food, and you, all her internet friends.

All she wants, and what we want for her, is to be able to enjoy what time she has left, in the familiar place she has lived in for so long, her bird by her side.  When she has the energy, she is able to sit at the computer and connect with you, her beloved friends, and hopefully new friends that will help prevent the bank from throwing this 90 year old woman out into the street, while she is clearly nearing the end of her time with us.

We cannot express what your support would mean to her, and us, and thus will be offering some incentives in the form or recorded materials of her singing career when she was young, singing at the Metropolitan theater in NY, and other Opera companies.  In addition, her recently penned autobiography will be available as well.  We will also be offering some priceless restored recordings of Danny Kay with the Andrew Sisters, who her husband played on as well, recorded in Les Paul’s garage studio, direct to 78 RPM records, if legalities permit.

We will add more history, pictures and sound bites of her life, as we collect them on a special blog site, so you may come to know the beautiful person she is.  People who meet her online or in person, become fans, inspired by the way she looks at life, and has faced adversity in such a graceful and beautiful way.  She is an inspiration to us all, and has helped countless people both personally and with their careers!  This woman deserves to go out with dignity instead of becoming another statistic of a banking system that has put countless people on the streets and taken their homes.

With your help, along with our efforts to keep a dialog going with the bank, and continuing to work hard finding new sources of income, we are praying, that we will be able to keep the bank at bay, so they won’t take her home, before she joins her sister and loved ones on the other side.  And we would certainly appreciate any support or advice in dealing with the bank issues as well, and local personal support to obtain any social services that may be available, rides to Dr. appointments, marketing, errands, etc.

We wish to thank you, people who know her, and those who don’t know her yet, but wish to help with anything you can offer during her most urgent time of need.

Blessings to you all,

Shama Helena.
