Almost one year ago, Katie and Ricardo left New Orleans to make a new life in Ricardo's beautiful homeland of Puerto Rico. Hurricane Maria ruined most of their possessions, made their apartment unliveable, and has shuttered their workplaces indefinitely. They are quicky running through their savings and face difficult decisions about what to do to survive the coming months as Puerto Rico begins its slow recovery. They are trying to pull together resources to move back to the US mainland to find work and begin rebuilding their lives.
Moving is expensive under the best of circumstances. Relocating after an unprecedented natural disaster has destroyed not only most of one's personal belongings, but also the infrastructure of one's entire community is very nearly prohibitive. Airplane tickets, living expenses as they look for work, apartment and utility security deposits, replacement of clothes--Katie and Ricardo need assistance with all of these things.
