Margrethe's Study Abroad in London!

Donation protected
Hi everyone!

My name is Margrethe Johnsen. I am 21 years old and currently a junior at Texas State University. A couple months ago I was approached by the sociology department at Texas State with an incredible opportunity to study abroad Summer 2018 in London, England! This will be a three week trip in a beautiful city that only 20 students get to participate in. Students will earn six hours of sociology credit and be able to chose the courses directly related to their majors. (link at the bottom of the page for more course info) I have recently been accepted into this program, but now I am faced with the issue of financing this trip.

A little over a year ago my dad was diagnosed with with stage 4 lung, stomach, and brain cancer. I had just moved away from home to San Marcos and begin my journey at Texas State University. Two months into the semester, my dad received his diagnosis. My mom went back to work and was taking care of my dad simultaneously; all the while, I’m four hours away at school. There was nothing I could do but finish out the semester and come home to spend the time I had left with my dad. Unfortunately, the chemotherapy and radiation treatments were unsuccessful, and we lost Bjørn Johnsen on December 28, 2016.

The absence of my father this past year has taken a toll on my mom and I both emotionally and financially. Everything happened so fast; there was no time to process our trauma or prepare for future challenges. My dad always talked about how he wanted me to get back to my European roots, with him being born and raised in Norway. Studying abroad presents a great opportunity for school and is only a two hour plane ride away from my family in Norway!

Financial aid isn't an option for me either. My dad did not leave a will, and he was the bread winner of my family. He took very good care of us until he couldn't anymore, but after his passing we lost everything. With the tuition fees and living expenses that I am already paying, this trip is impossible without help. The entire trip itself will cost $7000. (airfare, tuition, rooming, and other costs while there.) I’m working part time and saving up as much as I can, but I know this is a bit of a reach to do on my own. I would be furious with myself if I didn’t try literally every thing I could think of to get myself to London. Please help me make this dream a reality! Thank you for taking your time to read this and if you have any question or concerns please feel free to reach out to me.
