Marfan Syndrom

My son Kelvin was diagnosed with Marfan syndrome and requires several medical tests and treatments for the condition.  There are several setbacks with the medical insurance that we have.  The health insurance, does not cover genetic and chromosomal testing ($45,000).  This test is necessary in order to know which gene mutant is causing the syndrome.  Another setback, is that he needs two echocardiograms ($1,200) per year to monitor his aorta in the heart for any changes and the health insurance only covers 25% of first electrocardiogram exam per year.  We also need to pay out of pocket $80.00 for each visit to the specialist since the health insurance doesn't cover it.  As you know, the medical treatments and exams are costly and our insurance is not going to cover much.  We are in financial strain and are unable to pay a large portion of his medical expenses.       After Hurricane Maria, a lot of families were affected and we are one of those families.  My husband owns a restaurant, but with all the calamities the island has and is facing, many residents do not have the luxury of spending money on eating out and thus business has suffered.  The money that I earn and the little that my husband makes, only covers the day to day expenses.      If you can find it in your heart, and aid us in helping my son Kelvin get the necessary tests and treatments to prolong his life, we will be eternally grateful.  It will be the greates gift, he and us parents can have.  Thank you in advance for your kindness an financial help. Medical Condition Marfan syndrome      Marfan syndrome is an inherited disorder that affects connective tissue- the fibers that support and anchor your organs and other structures in your body.  Marfan Syndrome most commonly affects the heart, eyes, blood vessels and skeleton.      People with Marfan syndrome are usually tall and thin with disproportionately long arms, legs, fingers and toes.  The damage caused by Marfan syndrome can be mild or severe.  If the aorta, the large blood vessel that carries blood from your heart to the rest of the body is affected, the condition can become life-threatening.     Treatments usually includes medications to keep the blood pressure low to reduce strain on the aorta.  Regular monitoring to check for damage progression is vital.  Many people with Marfan syndrome eventually require preventive surgery to repair the aorta.   Español        Mi hijo Kelvin fue diagnosticado con el Síndrome de Marfan y requiere de exámenes y tratamiento para dicha condición. Hay par de situaciones con el plan médico. El plan médico no cubre estudios de genes y cromosomas($45,000). Los estudios son necesarios para saber cuál es el gen mutante que le ha causado este síndrome. Otra situación que hay es que tenemos que hacerle dos ecocardiograma (1,200) al año para monitorear la aorta de su corazón a ver si ha habido algún cambio y el plan médico solamente cubre un 25% y un solo electrocardiograma por año. También tenemos que pagar $80.00 por cada visita al genetisista porque los genetisistas no cogen plan médico. Como ustedes saben tratamientos médicos y estudios pueden ser bien costosos y mi plan médico no va pagar muchos de los estudios. En este momento estamos pasando un momento difícil para costear los gastos médicos.        Después del paso del huracán María, muchas familias  fueron afectados y nosotros somos uno de ellos. Mi esposo tiene un restaurante, pero con la catástrofe que está confrontando la isla, muchas personas no tienen el lujo de gastar dinero y este restaurante ha sufrido.  El dinero que yo me gano y lo poquito que genera mi marido solamente nos da para vivir el día a día.        Si puedes encontrarlo en tu corazón y ayudarnos en esta situación con mi hijo Kelvin para que el pueda obtener los laboratorios necesarios y los tratamientos para prolongar su vida estaremos eternamente agradecidos.
