This year, Everett and I have the honor to participate in REACH’s Mardi Gras King & Queen Competition. Four teams have been chosen to compete for the crown on February 20th at REACH's 2nd Annual Mardi Gras Dinner at Root + Barrel. The goal of this competition is to raise money to benefit REACH of Macon & Jackson Counties and the services they provide for victims and survivors of domestic and sexual violence. We hope to convey the importance of supporting this cause and the incredible organization that is serving the women, men, and children in our local communities.
REACH's mission is to eradicate domestic and sexual crimes in Macon and Jackson counties through prevention, intervention, and educational services. Just last year, REACH provided services to 557 unduplicated domestic violence victims, and 130 unduplicated sexual assault victims with a total of 1,052 court advocacy services, 1,662 housing services, and 624 material subsidies. REACH also operates an emergency shelter, which last year provided 15,267 meals and 5,089 emergency shelter nights to ensure that victims and their children had a safe place to live when leaving an abusive situation. In addition, REACH also provides community education and outreach including Violence Prevention Education for more than 1,500 (5th-9th grade) students and the New Choices programs, which provide job, life skills training, and wrap around services aimed at assisting clients in achieving self-sufficiency and long-term stability.
