Marcie’s Fight

On March 6, 2020 we made our way to the ER for some form of gastric issue. While in the ER it was found that our moms blood levels were low. Our mom was admitted to the hospital to trend her hemoglobin levels which we found were trending down. She had a endoscopy completed on 3/7/2020 where they found what they thought was a bleeding ulcer. Through the guidance of our family and doctors she was transferred to Williamsport hospital. At the time of transfer we were sure this was just a safety precaution to see if the ulcer needed clamped to stop the bleed. On 3/8/2020 we found that her levels continued to decline. The GI specialist was uneasy with the development and wanted to complete another endoscopy. Again she went back into the OR. When she returned we awaited her in her room. It’s that moment that will forever play in your mind again and again when she looked at us and shook her head stating, “they think I have cancer”. The scariest words you ever want to hear. In a million years this was beyond what we ever thought would be the result of our ER visit just 2 days prior. At that time we began the waiting game of the biopsy results. Her hemoglobin levels continued to drop and transfusions became a reality. On Tuesday 3/10/2020 the doctor came in to deliver results, our mother was diagnosed with adenocarcenoma of the stomach, diffuse type. At that time all we knew was that it was stomach cancer and she continues to bleed.  We discharged home that evening 3/10/2020 to get back to our family, we thrive better together. She continued with blood draws outpatient until we saw oncology on 3/12/2020. There she received bloodwork, transfusion, and a plan. Oncology recommended we go to Pittsburgh for surgical consult to remove her stomach and then possibly chemo, radiation, or both. On 3/13/2020 she had more bloodwork and hemoglobin was even lower requiring 2 units of blood. We felt like a constant battle of not losing too much blood and planning ahead. At this point we are still unsure where we sit and the full treatment plan. She will have a pet scan on 3/23/2020 and an endoscopic ultrasound 3/24/2020 and then to Pittsburgh on 3/25/2020. At this point our prayer is that it is contained and the pet scan shows no metastatic process.

we really went back and forth with doing this as people have their own battles during the covid-19 pandemic  but people continue to askwhat they can do. Our mother is unable to work at this time and it is unclear when/if she will be able to. She has a long road in front of herand a hard battle to fight with numerous tripsto Williamsport and Pittsburgh. We will fight this, and we will fight it hard. If she taught us anything it’s how to be strong. And we will be strong.

we appreciate all prayers and thoughts during this time as we get our mom healed and back to the fun loving, open door, feed everyone, love life, friend, mom, and mimi to all.
