Our aunt Marcelina, passed away on Monday, after a long battle with MDS. MDS is a form of cancer that attacks the bone marrow and makes it impossible for the body to produce healthy, mature blood cells. Last year in October, Marcelina had a stem cell transplant at a hospital in Houston. Then she was required to stay near the hospital for regular checkups, for testing and in case of an emergency. When Marcelina came home to San Antonio in April we thought that she was well and that she would be with us much longer. But just a couple of weeks later, her platelet count fell and she was admitted back into the hospital in Houston. Despite how strong she was, and how hard she fought for her life, Marcelina succumbed to the complications of this disease.

During all of that time, our aunt Veronica (aka PeeWee) has been by Marcelina’s side. She left her home in Florida in April, 2017. She came to San Antonio with the intent of staying until Marcelina was well and no longer needed her help. PeeWee lived with Marcelina in the hotel room all of those months when she was required to stay near the hospital. Then she lived in Marcelina’s hospital room for the past several weeks. She made sure that Marcelina was cared for in the best possible way when Marcelina could no longer care for and make decisions for herself and she was with Marcelina up to the moment when she passed away yesterday.

When Marcelina first got sick, it took a long time for her to be properly diagnosed with MDS. But once that happened and she was able to get proper treatment, her focus was always on getting well. Even when she checked into the hospital the final time in May, Marcelina had every intent on coming home. In fact, she packed clothes for just a few days. Being so focused on beating MDS, she did not make plans or put away money for a funeral and the family does not have the means to pay for a funeral.

Both of our aunts are wonderful people who loved each other very much. This was a long and terribly difficult journey for both of them and it has ended in heartbreak. We have and will continue to help as much as we can. But now we are also asking for your help too. We have set up this page to raise money to bring Marcelina home, and to pay for the cost of her funeral. We are also raising money to help our aunt PeeWee pay down the huge debt that she has incurred over the past fourteen months, while she has lived away from her own home and family, to take care of Marcelina.

The money that is raised here, will first pay for Marcelina’s funeral. Any additional money that is raised will go directly to aunt Veronica (PeeWee) so that she can pay down the personal debt that she has incurred during the time that she took care of Marcelina.

We are very appreciative of any amount of assistance that you contribute to this fund. Thank you so much.
