Ever wondered how it would feel to call a dumpsite home in one of the poorest countires on earth? Every year, millions of children from the ages of 4 years old do call these places home.
Coming from Australia, the thought had never really crossed my mind either, that is until my recent trip to Kenya where I was able to see the horrors myself.
These kids live in unbelievable conditions everyday with over 50% of them having some sort of respiratory disease and 30% having blood abnomalities caused by heavy-metal poisoning.
Two of my friends in Kenya (Ross & Bex) run charities that focus on providing under privileged children with quality education and housing. I want to get behind them.
Actions Not Words (started by Ross Floyd) is in Nakuru, Kenya. They take kids from the dumpsites and put them into schools and housing and directly change their lives. I was fortunate to be involved in and witness this firsthand. See - www.actionsnotwordskenya.com
Global Tribe (started by Rebecca Walton) is in East Pokot, Kenya. They place children from remote villages into schools and housing. These children are at risk of death from hunger/disease, child labour, forced marraige and female circumcision. See - www.globaltribe.com/africa
When I returned home I wanted to keep helping these kids I met and bonded with, some of which are still on the dumpsites and having to grow up in unimaginable conditions, doing anything to survive out there.
While I'm here in New Zealand I've decided to run the Old Ghost Road ULTRA Marathon, an 85 KM run through New Zealand's toughest terrain. For someone who hasn't run more then 10KM since high school, this will be one hell of a test - but nothing like what these kids go through everyday.
$2,000 will sponsor 10 kids from the dumps or rural villages for a year, giving them housing & schooling and more importantly getting them away from a life of disease and poverty.
Please don't let me run this torture track for nothing, let's raise some funds for a charities I know directly helps these kids.
