I’ll run my 32nd marathon in Luton, Bedfordshire. This week’s cause is gun safety, and I’m running for Everytown for Gun Safety, a US-based movement working to end gun violence through advocacy, education, and community action.

What is the problem?
In the United States, gun violence claims over 40,000 lives each year and affects countless more through injury, trauma, and loss. It’s not just about statistics—it’s about families torn apart, communities living in fear, and children growing up in environments where gunfire is normal.

Why am I running for this cause?
I can’t imagine the heartbreak of losing someone to preventable violence, but I want to do my bit. We’re lucky in the UK that this isn’t a problem to the magnitude in America but it doesn’t mean the thought of going to school, to the shops, to church, and not coming back doesn’t make me sick.

What does Everytown do?
Everytown is the largest gun violence prevention organisation in the US. They advocate for stronger laws, support survivors, and run education campaigns to promote responsible gun ownership. They believe that kindness means protecting one another, and love means creating safe spaces where families can thrive without fear.
