<div>I am Michael Thielemans (41 years old, Sleidinge) and this year I will be participating in the legendary Marathon Des Sables. From April 4 to 14, 2025, I will be running over 250 km through the Moroccan Sahara in 6 different stages, alongside fellow Sleidingans Kevin De Corte and Bavo Laureyns.

<div>To be adequately prepared for the start, I have been training, learning, and taking care of myself for 3 years. Not only physically, but especially mentally, I have embraced this challenge together with my family. It hasn’t always been easy, but thanks to their support and the valuable guidance of various professionals (Nutrition - Mental Coaching - Physiotherapy), I am now ready for the grand finale.

<div>I am of course not doing this for nothing, as my journey cannot be compared in any way to what some children have to endure during their rehabilitation after cancer treatment. With improved therapies, the chances of recovery for children with cancer have risen to 80%, which is certainly very positive. However, nearly 75% of children face one or more long-term effects after their intensive treatment:

<div>- Reduced physical fitness and activity

<div>- Reduced muscle strength
</div>
<div>- Fatigue
</div>
<div>- Changed body composition
</div>
<div>- Decreased mental well-being
</div>
<div>- Difficulties in returning to school, sports clubs, or other leisure activities.

<div>The KABOOST rehabilitation project at the Children's Rehabilitation Center UZ Ghent aims to address the treatment of these long-term effects and offers multidisciplinary rehabilitation to children and young people aged 8 and older after cancer treatment, with the goal of promoting their health, quality of life, and participation in community life.

<div>To support this program as much as possible and to keep the contributions for parents minimal, I wish to raise as much funding as possible for KABOOST.

<div>Om voldoende voorbereid aan de start te komen, heb ik 3 jaar lang getraind, geleerd en me verzorgd. Niet enkel fysiek, maar vooral ook mentaal heb ik deze uitdaging samen met mijn gezin opgenomen. Het was niet altijd even makkelijk, maar dankzij hun steun en de waardevolle begeleiding van verschillende professionals (Voeding - Mental Coaching - Kinesitherapie) ben ik nu klaar voor de grote finale.

<div>Dit doe ik uiteraard niet zomaar, want mijn parcours is in helemaal niets te vergelijken met datgene dat sommige kinderen moeten afleggen ter revalidatie na een kankerbehandeling. Door de verbeterde therapieën is de genezingskans voor kinderen met kanker gestegen naar 80%, wat uiteraard heel positief is. Toch wordt bijna 75% van de kinderen na hun intensieve behandeling geconfronteerd met één of meerdere langetermijneffecten:

<div>Het revalidatieproject KABOOST in het Kinder Revalidatie Centrum UZ Gent wil de behandeling van die langetermijneffecten aanpakken en biedt multidisciplinaire revalidatie aan kinderen en jongeren na een kankerbehandeling vanaf 8 jaar met als doel hun gezondheid, levenskwaliteit en deelname aan het maatschappelijke leven te bevorderen.
