College Visits for DC Students!

Tax deductible
Monument Academy students are dreaming of college!

Many children who have had contact with the child welfare system don’t have a sense of opportunity and possibility beyond getting through daily life. Careers and college are not always part of the world they navigate or know. School is a required chore, not a place that opens new opportunities. Monument Academy  is a public charter school that seeks to level the playing field for Washington DC’s most underserved youth: 84% of our children have been involved in the Foster Care system, 100% are on Free and Reduced Meals and nearly 25% are homeless.

Last year, we raised over $7,000 through our GoFundMe campaign to send nearly 80 students on college visits. This year our goal is to raise $10,000 to cover the full cost of taking all of our students (over 100 5th- 7th graders!) on college visits during the second week of June. Over the past two years, our students have been able to visit local colleges in D.C.- Howard University, Georgetown University, and American University and colleges in Pennsylvania- including Temple, Lincoln, University of Pennsylvania and Penn State. This year- they are visiting schools in Maryland and schools in Richmond, Virginia. These visits are a transformational experience for our students. They inspire our students to think seriously about pursuing a college degree, and allow them to talk with current college students about the importance of continuing education.

Now Daniel, who has been in and out of foster care, and is hoping for a fresh start in a new place once he graduates, was so excited by what he saw of the facilities at University of Maryland. He’s decided he’d like to go to a state university in California so he can combine sunny weather and a large university experience. He wants to major in business and start a music enterprise.

While we cannot change these students’ past or current circumstances, we can help affect their future life by shaping their goals and dreams towards something positive.  Working with a child to see the possibilities in front of them can be the motivator that makes all the difference. Please support us in that quest by funding our college visits.
