Mandy's Fight Against Cancer.
Imagine this. You're a fit and outgoing person, you go to work, love your exercise and you spend as much time as you possibly can with your family. You recently found out your daughter is pregnant and it's going to be a beautiful baby girl. Life is great. One day you head to the doctors to have a cyst checked out. But unbeknownst to you, this seemingly harmless cyst is actually stage 3 melanoma. Imagine that.
Australia has the highest melanoma rates in the world, hence the referral of the disease as 'Australia's National Cancer'. With 48,937 Australians living with this form of cancer at the end of 2010 and with a further 13,000 cases to be diagnosed by the end of 2016, it's easy to understand the serious threat this disease poses to our fellow family members and mates alike. Melanoma represents a mere 2% of all skin cancers, but is responsible for 75% of skin cancer fatalities. However, with the development of improved treatment and research techniques, specialists have been able to significantly increase the life expectancy of those diagnosed with advanced stages of the disease.
Mandy has a long and expensive road ahead of her in the pursuit of receiving the best available treatment. This has required her to leave her loving family and friends behind, as she moves to another state to receive this treatment.
