Mana Silviana's Eye Surgery

We are writing on behalf of Mana Silviana Anna Maria, a fellow Timorese who is now in need of our help. She was recently diagnosed with Retinal Detachment in one eye. Retinal Detachment is an eye condition in which the retina peels backs from the eye and if not treated causes blindness.

Mana Anna went to the eye doctor at the National Hospital in Dili (HNGV) and was told that they do not have the equipment to perform the surgery in Timor. She was then referred to Jakarta where the doctor had a colleague there who could perform the operation.

Friends of Mana Anna got together and organised funding and for her to fly to Jakarta to have the operation. She was advised that it would cost approximately $1,200 USD but when she saw the specialist in Jakarta they discovered that both eyes would need operating on and it would cost around $4,000 USD.

We are now looking for funding to help cover the cost of the operation as it is now much higher than first expected. She is currently waiting in Jakarta until we can raise 70% of the operation costs.

Mana Anna is a remarkable person who has contributed so much for her country in little but meaningful ways. She was a teacher at Ba Futuru but left, as she wanted to further her study as a teacher. The thing that makes her happy is teaching Timorese kids, and she needs her sight to do that well.
