Mama Lopez Breast Cancer Fund

Donation protected
It all started in August 2017. My mom thought that she had simply injured her breast while helping me move. After getting a mammogram, her doctor believed she had breast cancer which was later confirmed with a biopsy. She was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer which had spread to the right lymph node, the spine, and rib.

The treatment plan proposed by her oncologist at the time, was very aggressive resulting in a significant decrease in her quality of life. My mom is 68 and only has Medicare with no additional supplemental health insurance. She supports herself financially along with continuing to help support me while I finish my last semester at The University of Kansas. Her inability to maintain a job if she underwent that particular treatment plan left her feeling discouraged. Worried about paying her rent, medical bills, my tuition and other daily living expenses would not have been possible. She decided to not move forward with the treatment. Once the pain progressed to the point where she was unable to cook, do laundry, clean, grocery shop, and work - on March 13th, 2018 she decided to admit herself to the emergency room at Glenbrook Hospital.

The emergency room admitted her to the hospital to perform more tests and begun to help manage her pain. Her new oncologist, Dr. Saha told her that she was now faced with a cancerous tumor on her spine, and cancer has also spread to the lungs, brain, and neck. Her new treatment plan focuses on my mom's goal to shrink the tumors, prolong her time as much as possible, and maintain her desired quality of life. Her new treatment plan as of right now will be undergoing weekly chemotherapy treatment called Paclitaxel. As of March 20th, she is still in the hospital.

It has never been easy for our family to ask for help. But now we’re in a situation that we need all the help we can get. Our main concern is paying her rent, bills like water, electricity, gas, phone/cable,  daily living expenses etc. But we also have other expenses regarding her health to think about like the nursing care she will need, medical expenses and transportation to the hospital. She also intended to help with the remaining balance on my spring tuition.

We simply want Mama Lopez to not have to worry about her financial troubles. Her only concern should be following the doctor's treatment plan to ensure that the remainder of her life can be as comfortable and happy as possible. One of my mom's goals is to be able to make it to my graduation in May - and to eliminate the stress she is experiencing financially will hopefully make this goal attainable. This battle has been difficult, and it’s upsetting that some decisions were made based on lack of money. Moving forward, I’m hopeful that we will be able to at least take financial stress off her plate.

Anything will help. 25 cents, a prayer, any type of support is all she is looking for. If you’ve had the pleasure of knowing my mom, you know that she is a fighter. You also know that she has a spirit and light within her that shines in even the darkest of times. I want her to maintain that spirit and focus on enjoying every moment she has.

I thank you in advance for taking the time to read her story and for any donation or help you decide to contribute.
