<div>For decades, my mother, Edna - lovingly known as Mama Ed - has been the quiet hero of our family. She left her home in the Philippines to work in the United States not for her own comfort, but to lift her children, siblings, nieces, nephews, and relatives out of poverty. Because of her sacrifices, many were able to finish school, build better lives, and now give back to others, continuing the cycle of kindness Mama Ed began.

<div>Two years ago, Mama Ed made what she believed would be her last great sacrifice. After helping yet another relative finish school, just one of countless acts of generosity over decades she finally decided it was time to focus on herself. For the first time, she allowed herself to dream of rest, peace, and a life no longer defined by constant giving.

<div>However, just as she was barely starting that new chapter, devastating news arrived. The woman who gave so much is now facing the fight of her life.

<div>Two months ago, our family received heartbreaking news: Mama Ed was diagnosed with Stage 3 lung cancer. Her treatment plan includes four sessions of chemotherapy every three weeks, followed by 5–6 weeks of radiation, and eventually immunotherapy and other targeted treatments. The road ahead is long and uncertain, but Mama Ed and our family are determined to fight with courage, faith, and hope.

<div>Lung cancer is a notoriously aggressive illness, often associated with a high mortality rate. Despite this frightening reality, we refuse to let fear define Mama Ed’s story. We are committed to fighting with everything we have so she can live a full life: the life she deserves, surrounded by love, dignity, and hope. This diagnosis does not define her ending; it marks the beginning of a courageous fight.

<div>The reality, however, is overwhelming. Mama Ed will not be able to work while undergoing treatment. She will need all her strength to endure the physical and emotional toll, as well as the constant presence of a caregiver to help with daily tasks, meals, and emotional support. My father, Papa Leo, is 78 years old and struggling with his own health issues. Though he is doing his best, they currently survive on a very limited Social Security benefit.

<div>They are now facing mounting financial challenges: covering food, medications, utilities, transportation to treatments, and basic living expenses while also preparing for the heavy costs associated with cancer care. Insurance approvals add another layer of uncertainty, as each treatment cycle must be authorized before it can proceed.

<div>While our extended family continues to help in every way possible, the needs are far greater than what we by ourselves can provide.
</div>

<div>Mama Ed has spent her entire life lifting others up often at the expense of her own comfort, health, and dreams. Today, she is the one who needs lifting.
