Malia'Kekia to India #mahipoweryoga

In March of 2017,  I took a yoga class in Louisville that left me crying tears of joy as I positioned my hands into odd shapes upon my face and released my breath into the space. I was shocked and inspired by this room packed with students willing to share their mana (Polynesian belief for personal power). I was even more moved by the yogi who instructed us to not only to move through traditional yoga positions, but to walk around the room as well, placing a hand on each other’s hearts, sharing breath, and seeing one another. Was this true yoga? It wasn’t what I’d known yoga to be; this felt much deeper. It was a new practice that felt rich with ancient wisdom. I stayed after to speak with the yogi and she referred me to Mahi Power Yoga, where she had trained with Guru Mahi in India.

Mahi Power Yoga is an US-certified, RYT (registered yoga teacher), 200-hour yoga training course held in Dharamshala, India. Dharamshala is nestled in the Himalayas and is home to His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. The course certifies in four different types of yoga: Therapeutic, Hatha, Vinyasa, and Ashtanga and offers additional courses in meditation, anatomy, physiology, yoga philosophy, and the art of teaching. I recognize the importance of going straight to the source in order to dive into a yoga practice that is richer and purer than what we receive in the West. I’m humbled to announce that my application to Mahi Power Yoga has been approved and that I’ve been accepted into the course.

As a teaching artist and dancer, movement is an essential part of my life and well-being. Movement is the language I am the most fluent in. As I grow abudant with age, I know my body calls out for new forms of expression. I’ve been a student of yoga since 2009. People often ask me when or where I teach yoga, noting my “yogi voice” and “Earth Mama” vibe. And yes, I am that hippie chick you might see in an airport holding downward dog during a long layover. To me, health of body and healthy mind are symbiotic, and yoga affirms this truth time and time again.

So why fund my campaign? I’ll break it down for you: tuition, room, and board for Mahi Power Yoga (April 6th - May 6th, 2018) is $1,300. Flights to India are priced up to $2,000 and GoFundMe receives a percentage of the total sum raised. I’d be overjoyed to raise $3,500 to cover the cost of this life-altering education that I hold so dear to my heart. Upon returning to the states, I will be giving private lessons and holding open classes to everyone who makes a donation! My intention is to give back all the light and wisdom India will open my eyes, mind, and spirit to!

I’m so excited to to share this practice with all of you. Mahi Power Yoga will no doubt open new avenues of work as an artist, deepen my spirituality, and color my teachings with a brilliant new palette.

Mahalo nui loa, with light and love!
