Malcolm's New Heart & A Promise of Hope

Malcolm is 28 years old and is fighting for his life awaiting a heart transplant. Malcolm is going to be a father with his first child coming in March 2020!

In July 2018 Malcolm was in an accident and was taken to the hospital where doctors discovered he had an enlarged heart. Further testing confirmed that his heart was only operating at 20% which left everyone in amazement by his ability to work and participate in every day activities with no immediate complications.

A year later, complications began to surface. Malcolm developed severe pain in his stomach which lead to a discovery that his kidney was in distress from lack of fluids, which led to a gallbladder infection and breathing difficulties. It was determined his heart was too weak to withstand an operation and on October 3rd, Malcolm went into total heart failure and he had emergency surgery to implant a BIVAD device (mechanical pumps that takes over the heart’s work) to temporarily keep him alive until a new heart is found. The BIVAD has its own risks such as clots and strokes which can increase the longer a person is attached to it. Since this surgery Malcolm has had to undergo 3 additional surgeries to remove clots and stop fluid buildup around his heart.

As they search for his new heart we hang on to prayer and hope and the love of family and friends. We are inspired by Malcolm’s champion spirit and amazing smile in spite of everything he has gone through thus far.  The road ahead for Malcolm will not be an easy one. Once he receives a new heart, he will not be able to work or fully support his soon to be family for at least a year or more.
