#benderaputih Food for Malaysian Families in Need

We are raising funds for the purchase of food and essentials via vetted charities in Malaysia for families past the breaking point under #benderaputih. Breadwinners are not able to go to work, and with no income, there's no food and they starve.  

$50 sustains a family of 4 for 1 month. $500 supports 10 families and $25,000 feeds 500 families. Please help! 

Working via HumankindNow , an IRS recognized, US registered 501c3 non-profit public charity, this campaign is tax-deductible and eligible for donation matching programs at Google, Apple, Disney, Microsoft, etc. Tax receipts will be provided. 

Food packages include: 10kg of rice, 5kg onions, 1L of cooking oil, milk powder, soy sauce, belachan sambal, coconut powder, salted fish and more. UHT milk, sanitary products are provided where applicable/possible as well.

What is the capacity? We're working through 3 charities (and an army of volunteers) and can immediately distribute USD $200,000 per month of supplies. With additional resources and a 1 week ramp up, this can be increased significantly through additional partnerships.

Where Will My Donation Go?
HumanKindNow 501(c)(3) will distribute your donation directly to charities selected on the basis of historical impact, food distribution capability and speed of distribution. Recipients are underserved whether the urban poor or far out in the rural areas which aren't as 'popular' to support.
  • Yellow House (Shyam Priah) is a 7-year old, accredited non-profit dedicated to improving lives of urban poor, homeless and refugee communities in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. Over 26,000 packages have been distributed since April. 
  • Yayasan Chow Kit (YCK, Hartini Zainuddin ) is a registered 24-hour crisis and drop-in centre providing meals, activities, therapy, case management, ​and educational programmes for at-risk children and teenagers around Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur.  YCK has distributed to thousands of families and has a 200 family long vetted waitlist. 
  •  Refuge for the refugees (RFTR, Heidy Quah) is a registered non-profit organization raises awareness and provides education for refugee children in Malaysia. RFTR distributes 1,000 packages per week and is increasing their efforts.
  • Countless others are approaching us for more and we hope to support as many as feasible. 

After surviving on biscuits for three days, a single mother put up a white flag outside her house. So began the viral #whiteflag #benderaputih campaign.

We Need Your Help!
$25 supports up to 2 weeks of supplies for a family of 4. $50 supports 1 month, $500 supports 10 families for a month. Please consider donating to this urgent need, and spread awareness by sharing with your friends. No donation is too small. 
Your donation is also eligible for donation matching programs at many companies (Google, Apple, Microsoft, Disney and more). To do so, we partnered with HumankindNow, a registered 501c3 non-profit organization that enables donations to this campaign to be tax-deductible and meet requirements for company matching programs.

Situation in Malaysia Today
In June 2021, under the new enhanced movement control order (EMCO), residents are not allowed to leave their homes, and only one representative per household is allowed to exit to purchase essential supplies. Travel is confined to a 6 mile radius, monitored by the police and armed forces. This devastates marginalized groups that rely entirely on in-person work and day-to-day wages.

Malaysia has been in various levels of lockdown for over a year now that more folks have run out of savings. While bad enough at the beginning where the significantly marginalized communities were impacted (refugees, migrants,  rural plantation workers), a large number of the working poor have past the breaking point. Even areas where you would think would be ok (Cheras, Setapak, etc) are now crying for help.

About the Organizers
This campaign is organized by Janssen Choong  (Partner, Horizon Connect) and Louise Lai  (Senior PM, Walmart Labs), two Malaysians living abroad and passionate about giving back to their communities.

HumankindNow  is a US based registered 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity ( IRS Determination ) and will be passing through all donations received. You will receive a donation receipt for your tax filings when done via GoFundMe (which will be through PPGF) or directly from HumankindNow if sending to their bank account. For many companies (eg. Google, Apple, Disney, many others), the donation is eligible for company matching.
