The Malawi Girl Project Fundraiser

Donation protected
In the Summer of 2013, I was granted the opportunity to travel to the nation of Malawi to serve as a medical missionary through Mercer University's Mercer on Mission program. For eight days, I and a team of Mercer students operated a rural health clinic in the village of Chuluchosema outside the city of Zomba, Malawi. It is here where I made lasting friendships that extended beyond my stay. It is here where I discovered the true value of the human spirit. And it is here where I had experiences that have changed my life.

Unfortunately, it is also here at Chuluchosema where I experienced first-hand the health challenges that rural Malawian women and girls experience on a daily basis. Though there is never a lack of spirit and tenacity to endure through their circumstances, the resources to help them endure is lacking. Over half of rural Malawians live at or below the poverty line, which means that materials that we deem are basic necessities, like feminine hygiene products, are viewed as unaffordable, expensive luxuries.

Recently, a new schoolbuilding was erected in the village of Chuluchosema which aims to serve the educational needs of the many boys and girls who inhabit the surrounding area. For young and adolescent girls in Malawi, as in other nations in Africa, attending school during their premenstrual cycle can be a nuisance, especially when feminine hygiene projects like pads and feminine wipes are unavailable. This is what prompted me to found the Malawi Girl Project.

The purpose of the Malawi Girl Project is to provide the adolescent girls enrolled in primary and secondary school in the area around Chuluchosema with a stockpile of feminine hygiene products to aid in their overall comfort and cleanliness as they endure through their monthly menstrual cycles. The main items that we aim to collect include pads, panty liners, and feminine wipes, and we are also accepting deodorants and lotions. We are also planning to incorporate an educational component by conducting workshops to inform the girls about what happens to their bodies during menstruation, as well as to demonstrate how to properly use the products collected.

With the funds raised thus far (over $2600),  250 girls in two secondary and one primary school have been served! But the work doesn't stop there. Because of the high costs of shipping, I could not afford to sent all of the supplies collected. However, after learning how cheap it is to travel to Malawi, my mother and I have decided to fly there and personally deliver the remainder of the supplies! With that said, I have increased the Malawi Girl Project's goal by $1000 to assist my mother and I with travel expenses and duty costs to carry the supplies with us.

I created this project with the hope of giving back to a community that has given me so much. Being able to raise the money and collect the much-needed supplies for the women and girls at Chuluchosema would not only be an accomplishment, but a well-deserved blessing for those who will benefit most. Now that my mother and I have the opportunity to personally take part in this project, your help would be appreciated even more. With your help and generosity, we can reach and even surpass our new goal of $3500!
