Malary's Cataract Surgery Fund

Donation protected
We are currently running a special fundraiser to help Malary regain her eyesight.  She arrived in 2014 after colliding with a fence. Veterinarian, Mike Melloy, examined the bird and discovered that she has a ruptured lens in her right eye, and limited vision in her left due to a cataract.

Malary was a juvenile that summer. Like all the Hawks Aloft avian ambassadors, we gave her an educational name so we could talk about the species she represents, Prairie Falcon. The 'malar' stripes, dark vertical streaks below the eyes, are present on all falcon species, an adaptation that helps to deflect the sun's rays, similar to the 'eye black' that football players wear.

In the four years since then, Malary  works with our educators to deliver vital lessons about her species and the importance of birds of prey and their habitats. This beautiful falcon species , so representative of the West, is now in decline, and Malary has educated thousands about the importance of preserving Prairie Falcon populations in the Southwest.

Yet, because Malary has such limited vision, she doesn't go to many programs these days. While quite content in her home with volunteer Lizzie Roberts and her mews mate, a male Prairie Falcon named Sunny, new places can be scary for her, since it is difficult for her to see them.

There's a great silver lining though!  Eye Care for Animals recently examined her and determined that cataract surgery will restore her vision. They will donate 75% of the cost of the surgery, and Dr. Daniel Levenson of Southwestern Veterinary Medical Center will donate his assistance to perform the anesthesia for the surgery.

PLEASE HELP us achieve our goal to raise $1,500 to cover the surgical expenses and also the medications that will be required post-surgery.
