Making Noise: Standing with Survivors

The recent protests and political movements in Australia have proven that gender-based violence still plagues our country. The conversations that we are having about sexual violence online are further proof that the shame attached to seeking help is stubborn and pervasive. Further, the education, resources, and services available around themes of consent and sexual safety are still so inadequate in reversing the problem.

As a survivor, I understand, first-hand, the weight and re-traumatisation that comes with speaking out and seeking support services. More crucially, we know that when survivors don’t have access to appropriate services, various other parts of their lives are negatively impacted as a result.

To celebrate the courageous work of survivors across the country, and to foster the possibility of hope for survivors everywhere, I have worked alongside a team of friends who have been equally blown away and empowered by local and national efforts of advocacy. Collectively, we decided that #APostIsNotEnough – we don’t want these efforts to lose traction, or the work of survivors to be simply treated as a conversation that the public only sometimes joins into. In the words of Grace Tame, we want to keep “making noise” – so that’s exactly what we’ll do.

Our upcoming fundraising event – Making Noise: Standing With Survivors – that will be held on July 2 at The Line in Footscray, Melbourne. Please see our flyer attached. Through this event, we will be raising donations for Full Stop Australia, who are wholly dedicated to supporting survivors and their recovery through their free trauma specialist counselling services.

If you cannot make the night, please donate what you can to a fantastic cause.

In solidarity,

Alyce Gumley
