Making A Change In Memory of Maxine

Donation protected
Maxine was beautiful, both inside and out. She was a very educated woman and after completing her honours degree from Maynooth University, she was studying for her MA(Masters) in Child Youth & Family studies - Maxine really wanted to help people.

Maxine really wanted to help people but was unfortunately failed by the people who are supposed to help us - our health system. How Maxine's life could end the way it has deserves the utmost scrutiny on that health system. This family and the public who rely on help from public health services need answers and solutions, in the hope of preventing another young life lost.

We hope to bring about changes in the mental health system in Ireland. Poor mental health is something that will affect each and every one of us at some point in our lives, whether we suffer from it ourselves or love somebody who suffers. We are told to reach out and look for help when we are going through a hard time but our mental health service does not have training, facilities or policies in place to save all of the lives that are reaching out.

Too many lives, like Maxine's, have been lost because when they did reach out for the help they needed and deserved, it just wasn't there. Our government need to make mental illness as much of a priority as physical illness before there are any more hearts broken due to suicide.

It will cost €10,000 to obtain an independent export report from a medical specialist, looking into the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of our beautiful daughter Maxine and how her death was preventable, if she had received the right care from our mental health services throughout the most testing time of her illness.

We hope this report will shed a light on the several stages in December 2016 where Maxine was failed by the health system, and where her life could have been saved had her mental illness been made a priority to the hospitals and clinics looking after her. Having the circumstances researched and compiled in this report will hopefully draw more attention to the changes that need to be made and ensure that they ARE made so that when people reach out for life-saving help, they get it.

We feel very passionate about this. I have talked to a few people who research suicide and each one has said it is preventable. Early intervention is the key. Maxine did reach out for help and had it been given to her, she would be still with us today. If even one more family can be saved from what our family has been through and is still going through, it will be worth it. Suicide is all too common now and yet is still not treated with the importance it needs, playing second priority to physical illness despite it being oftentimes more crippling and dangerous than a physical one. The government needs to listen, act and bring the mental health service up to date.

Myself and my family will be so grateful for any support given. We need these funds ideally before the inquest into Maxine's death is undertaken by the HSE (date yet to be confirmed). Our community and other communities all over Ireland have been tragically affected by suicide and too many young lives not given enough of the right help to keep living. Please join us and say ENOUGH.

We want EFFECTIVE and LIFE-SAVING mental health services.

We are forever in your debt if you can help in any way.
Thank you,

Kathy Maguire (Heartbroken mother)
