Makers for COVID-19

Donation protected
Makers for COVID-19 is a coalition of +330 individual hobbyists and 3D-printer owners all around the United States and the world. Together, we are supporting medical professionals, teachers, and essential workers with 3D-printed PPE. Our group lives on slack, where we:

- help new Makers get started
- share the newest information on shortages, hospitals in need, efficient printing techniques, and improved 3D-files
- ensure our contributions meet the highest medical grade possible (NIH approved)
- distribute and ship materials to hospitals in critical areas such as New York City, California, Florida, and the Navajo Nation
- support and encourage each other during this difficult time

Our members are properly printing face shields, ear savers, and producing fabric masks. Since our start in March we have donated +69,000 units of PPE.

All of our members are volunteers and printing these items at their own cost. Many have donated their time, printers, materials, and purchased additional materials (such as clear plastic sheets for face shields) for this cause. In addition to printing, many of our Makers will go out of their way to deliver life-saving PPE to facilities and individuals in critical areas.

Many individuals especially healthcare workers have passed away due to the lack of PPE available. If not for the generous efforts and donations of our Makers, many more healthcare workers would be unprotected and at risk. To encourage our amazing Makers to keep printing and combat these devastating shortages faced by teachers in re-opening states and medical professionals in COVID-19 hotspots, please consider donating to help cover our costs.

This is a breakdown of the minimum supply costs for each item our Makers are printing. Over the past few months, we have been able to significantly lower these costs thanks to the discounts and in-kind donations we have worked diligently to secure!
- Face shields - $0.85
- Face masks - $1.75
- Ear savers - $0.15
Considering that many Makers use a special grade of materials for their printers, this breakdown is undercutting the true costs that Makers have substantiated in an effort to do their part and help. While we don't expect to have all of our supply costs reimbursed to us, we appreciate your support and many of us will continue printing at our own costs.

About the Founder
My name is Karina and I am a freshman at Cornell University (19 y/o). I graduated Brooklyn Technical High School and that's where I learned all about 3D-printing. I am the daughter of two Ukrainian immigrants and am born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. I have been 3D-printing for 4+ years at NYU's Makerspace, Brooklyn Tech, Cornell, and now in the bedroom that I share with my little sister. I absolutely love 3D-printing and have been sharing my love for it by traveling and educating students all over the United States while showing parents and teachers that 3D-printers are affordable and accessible. After being sent back home to Brooklyn mid-semester with my 3 printers, I couldn't sit back and do nothing like most Makers. I started doing research to understand the nuances of printing medical grade PPE and additional materials. That same day I started printing face shields and created a slack group for Makers like myself to understand these nuances and get the latest information. Overnight, the group grew to be 170+ members strong and one of the largest Maker collaborations for COVID-19 with new members flooding in everyday. On top of moderating the slack and creating resources for our Makers, I am running my printers 24/7, setting timers, and waking up in the middle of the night to start a new print the minute a previous print is complete. Like most of our Makers, I am doing everything I can, which is why your support no matter how little encourages us to keep going and keep making.
