My daughter, Makenzi Lopez was taken to a Corpus Christi, Tx. E.R. on April 24th with swelling in her right leg & severe pain. After doing a cat scan it was found she had Necrotizing Fasciitis (the flesh eating disease) & had surgery immediately that morning & again the following day. We were told she would probably not make it as there was a 73% mortality rate & at best she had a 40% chance of survival. The day of her second surgery the doctors in Corpus Christi realized they weren't set up to properly care for her as she had one of the worst cases they had ever seen & decided she required specialized care at a bigger hospital. Shortly after her second surgery they transferred her to Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio & was admitted to the isolation burn unit. She was in the hospital for a month & underwent 3 more surgeries before she was finally released on May 17th. In the end she lost 80% of her right leg from her knee, up her thigh, buttock, & upper back. To literally add insult to injury, while still in the hospital, she was informed by her employer she would no longer hold her position as Property Manager at the apartment complex where she currently lives as well as the high probability of losing her apartment. In addition to all of this she still faces repeated trips back to Brook Army Medical Center Outpatient Burn clinic for wound evaluation & physical therapy. Then approximately 6 months of intensive physical therapy in Corpus Christi & having to endure a painful recovery that will take at least 1 year. Even though she had medical insurance through her work, it only paid for part of her medical expenses. Through the bills she has received so far we have learned it cost nearly $20,000.00 per day just to be in the burn unit, and does not include the cost for her tests, procedures, or 5 surgeries. Out of her expenses only a small portion will be covered as that hospital is "out of network". We are estimating the total cost of her medical bills to easily reach 1 million dollars or more & that is not including her aftercare. Our family can only do so much so I am pleading with everyone to please help. Makenzi & I do not like the idea of solicitating online for help as we are a very private & independent family, but we are in a catastrophic situation & would be so very humbled & appreciative of any help at all.
