Help a Syrian Refugee get a Degree

Donation protected
Dear everyone,

I’d like to introduce you to Mohammad Noor Alshih Ali. Noor, which means light in Arabic, is one of the most impressive and inspirational humans I’ve ever met. He is a young, ambitious and hardworking Syrian refugee who needs your help to make his dream of studying in Canada come true.

Despite the hardships Noor has faced he believes that no matter how bad your situation may be, there is always room for hope. That no matter the challenges life presents you; there is always the ability to overcome them. And he is living proof of both.

Noor escaped the war in Syria and fled to Turkey where he simultaneously learned a new language, studied for a Bachelor’s degree and worked to support his family stuck in their town close to Aleppo.

Always passionate about the English language, literature and writing Noor studied Arabic-English-Arabic Translation at Al-Baath University in Syria, but when the war broke out he was forced to flee his family and homeland and abandon his studies in his graduation year. He was devastated.

In Turkey, Noor tried to resume his degree, but was unable because his existing credits weren’t transferable, so he had to start all over again. Undeterred, Noor began learning Turkish. During which he earned an award from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs for his accomplishments. Two years later, equipped with a new language, Noor began studying for a Bachelor’s of English Language and Literature at the University of Gaziantep since he’s always been a lover of Shakespeare. Four years on Noor received his degree and with honours!

Trilingual, Noor supported himself and his family, trapped in Syria where they were living without clean water and food, by working as an interpreter on the Turkish-Syrian border for international journalists and governmental and non-governmental humanitarian organisations. For most of the conflict Noor was the sole bread winner for his family.

A lover of languages, cultures and people, Noor also began teaching himself French to support the work of a man from Quebec, whom introduced him to a very strange but charming accent. He later learnt it was Quebecois. From this man Noor learnt more about Canada, a place he thought was incredible for its acceptance of Syrians fleeing violence.

Noor’s biggest dream while studying for his Bachelor’s was to complete a Master’s degree in Canada. The moment he got his diploma from Gaziantep University, Noor realized that he was one-step closer to making this a reality.

Although Noor was giving large sums of money to his family to keep them afloat in Syria he managed to stash some away for his future studies in Canada. Noor had not yet been accepted to study in Canada but he knew that if he worked to make his dream come true, one day it would happen!

In January 2017, Noor applied for graduate studies at York University in Toronto, Canada. In July, Noor received the greatest news of his life: he was accepted!

"It is happening. I can't believe it. This is such a MIRACLE!” he told his friends.

But Noor has been hit with one more setback. Despite all of his efforts to save every spare penny for his education, Noor is short $12,865. Without this Noor will not be able to start classes this autumn.

To obtain a Canadian Student Visa Noor must officially show that he can afford the tuition of $18,825 and have an additional $10,000 in his bank account for living expenses while in Canada. Noor only has $16,000 in his savings in Turkey, and is now seeing his life-long dream fading away before his very eyes. This is why I’m posting this GoFundMe campaign.

Noor has worked tremendously hard to make his dream come true and he’s so close. He just needs a little extra help. Please help him make up this shortfall.

Please join me, Tanya Castle, a Canadian, in making Noor’s dream come true. Whatever you can give is truly truly appreciated. It will change Noor's life!

Shukran jazilan, thank you very much!
